Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir and Madam,

I am writing in response to your recent advertisement looking for someone to teach your children a different language for a year. I believe I would be ideal candidate to take this responsibility.

Firstly, I am extremely confidence that I have a strong command in teaching my language. I am also good at communication skills and would like to adapt various teaching methods according to the others learning styles. My teaching methods would help your wards to improve all the modules of learning. For example, they will be more expect in reading, writing , listening and speaking before the course ends.

I can also help your family with some other services. For example, doing baby sitting, help your kids to do the homework, participate in indoor activities with them and also can assist you with some household work, if required.

Finally, I would like to experience Australian culture and traditions while being with your family and I am glad to share my culture with you as well. This embark me to connect with other community people and to be more proactive.

Thank you for considering my application in advance. I hope to receive favourable response.

Yours faithfully,

Anjali

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt effectively. You explained your suitability by highlighting your teaching skills, offered additional services like babysitting and household help, and clearly stated your motivation for wanting the job, which is to experience Australian culture. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, although the salutation 'Dear Sir and Madam' is slightly generic given the prompt mentions a 'couple'. Using their names or a more specific opening would have been better. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your intentions clearly throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'For example', and 'Finally' to guide the reader through your points. While the structure is sound, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical. For instance, the transition in the final paragraph ('This embark me to...') is a bit awkward and lacks smooth connectivity. However, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall progression of ideas is easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a coherent response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'favourable response' and 'proactive'. However, there are some noticeable errors in word choice and collocation that slightly hinder precision. For example, you use 'expect' instead of 'expert' or 'proficient', and 'wards' is an unusual choice for children in this context. Additionally, 'This embark me' is grammatically and lexically incorrect. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they indicate a need for more careful word selection and a better grasp of collocations to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'I am extremely confidence' (should be 'confident'), 'command in teaching' (should be 'command of'), and 'help your kids to do the homework' (should be 'help with homework'). The phrase 'This embark me' is a significant error in verb form and usage. While you attempt complex sentences, the frequency of these errors is noticeable. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions and word forms.
