Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my interest in the position you advertised for someone to teach your two children Punjabi for a year. I believe I would be a suitable candidate for this role because Punjabi is my native language, and I have a strong command of both spoken and written Punjabi.
I am patient, responsible, and comfortable working with children. I would make the lessons enjoyable by using stories, games, and everyday conversations. This would help your children develop their vocabulary, pronunciation, and confidence. In addition to teaching Punjabi, I could assist your children with their homework and help the family with light household tasks when required.
There are several reasons why I am interested in this position. Firstly, I enjoy teaching and sharing my language and culture with others. Furthermore, working with your family would give me valuable teaching experience. I would also appreciate the opportunity to experience life in Australia and learn more about Australian culture.
I would be delighted to discuss the position with you further and look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Harmanjot Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain your suitability by highlighting your native language skills and teaching approach. You also effectively suggest additional contributions, such as homework assistance and light household tasks. Finally, your reasons for wanting the job—personal interest in teaching, professional development, and cultural exchange—are well-developed and relevant. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. You have successfully covered all requirements of the task with a logical and well-structured approach.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from your suitability to your additional skills and finally your motivations. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In addition to,' 'Firstly,' and 'Furthermore,' which help guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, and the overall structure is clear and easy to follow. The letter maintains a consistent and professional flow throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal letter. Phrases like 'strong command,' 'valuable teaching experience,' and 'delighted to discuss' are used accurately and naturally. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it is generally standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to add nuance. However, the current range is sufficient for the task, and there are no errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
Your grammar is highly accurate, with a variety of sentence structures used correctly. You successfully employ complex sentences, such as 'I believe I would be a suitable candidate for this role because Punjabi is my native language,' and 'I would make the lessons enjoyable by using stories, games, and everyday conversations.' Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and there are no significant grammatical errors. The control over tense and modal verbs is consistent, reflecting a high level of proficiency and clarity in your writing.
