Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mr. And Mrs. Smith,

I am writing in response to your advertisement posted in the newspaper for a professional teacher in Hindi. I have obtained a PHD in language and have masters degree in cultural behaviour.

I certainly believe I would be a perfect match as I have 15+ years of experience in teaching the native language to children of all age groups along with that I help young adults to built personality and behaviour. I am very patient and a good communicator. I have a strong command on the language and can teach various vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation in a very easy way.

In addition, to teaching I would also be happy to help you in everyday task. For example, taking the children to the park, assisting them in homework, practicing my native language in routine. Besides this I can also give a helping hand in light household chores.

I would particularly want this job because it would give me an opportunity to work with an Australian family and give me and experience of your culture. Moreover, it will also be beneficial for your children in learning a native language from a professional. I believe this would work in favour for both of us.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope to hear back from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Pearl Sequeira.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You clearly explained your suitability by highlighting your academic background and 15+ years of experience. You also provided relevant examples of additional help, such as assisting with homework and household chores, and clearly articulated your motivation for wanting the job. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The response is well-developed and provides sufficient detail to satisfy the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition,' 'Besides this,' and 'Moreover' to link your ideas effectively. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be slightly smoother to improve the flow. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, such as 'professional teacher,' 'cultural behaviour,' and 'consideration.' There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'built personality' (should be 'build') and 'strong command on the language' (should be 'command of'). While you use some precise terms, there is room to incorporate more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions to reach a higher band. Nevertheless, the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and accurately throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I have obtained a PHD in language and have masters degree' (missing an article 'a') and 'give me and experience' (should be 'an'). Additionally, 'I have a strong command on the language' contains a preposition error. Despite these occasional slips, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your meaning is never obscured. Your control over punctuation and sentence structure is generally good.
