Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear .................. ,

I am writing to apply for the job of an online English language tutor for your children in Australia. I saw the advertisement you posted online and I am willing to tutor them for a year.

I have a masters in English literature from the University of Oxford and 10 years of experience as an English language professor in few of the tops colleges of London. My qualifications make me suitable for this job

I am willing to tutor them for two hours on weekdays, between 6pm to 10pm at Australian time. These hours will be suitable for you, as your working shift ends at 5pm. In this way, I can take the online classes in your presence.

I will be extremely grateful, if you will consider me for this job as I currently require a temporary job to pay for my car installments.

I look forward ro your response.

Your sincerely,

Ayesha Noor

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You explained your suitability by highlighting your academic background and experience, suggested additional help by offering to tutor during specific hours, and provided a reason for wanting the job. However, the development of these points is somewhat thin. For instance, the reason for wanting the job—to pay for car installments—is quite personal and perhaps not the most professional tone for a formal application. To reach a higher band, you should expand on how your teaching style or passion for education would benefit the children, rather than focusing on personal financial needs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to your qualifications, availability, and finally your motivation. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate these distinct ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. For example, the transition 'In this way' is a good attempt, but the overall flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect your sentences more fluidly. The letter is easy to follow, but the transitions between sentences feel a bit abrupt at times.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'qualifications', 'advertisement', and 'temporary'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, you wrote 'professor in few of the tops colleges', which should be 'professor at some of the top colleges'. Additionally, 'Australian time' is slightly unnatural; 'Australian time zone' or 'local time' would be more precise. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I have a masters' (should be 'a master's degree'), 'in few of the tops colleges' (should be 'at some of the top colleges'), and 'I look forward ro your response' (a typo). Furthermore, the sentence 'I will be extremely grateful, if you will consider me' contains an unnecessary comma. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for small errors and subject-verb agreement will help improve your accuracy.
