Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this to show my keen Interest in the job of a tutor. I have seen an advertisement in the local newspaper that you want a good and a well educated tutor for the French classes for your children. I will be a great teacher for your kids because I had 3 years' experience of French language at oxford school in the England, now I have left the job because of family reasons and changed the country.

For the French classes I can gave 20% discount on fees which will be affordable for you. Additionally, I am also experienced in babysitting if you guys want I can take care of your children when will be out for work and teach them some good habits as well.

I really need this job as I am new immigrant in this country, so I want to earn for the living and want to become the self- employed rather than to do a job under any employee. Through this I can earn the Australian work experience also.

I hope you will consider my application and give me opportunity.

Thank you

Lily

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter covers all three bullet points: your suitability, additional help, and reasons for applying. However, the tone is inconsistent. You addressed the letter to 'Dear Sir,' but the prompt asks you to write to a 'couple,' which requires a more personal or neutral salutation like 'Dear Mr. and Mrs. Smith' or 'Dear Parents.' Additionally, the explanation of your reasons for wanting the job is slightly informal and focuses heavily on your personal financial situation rather than your passion for teaching or cultural exchange, which would be more appropriate for this context.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each addressing a specific requirement of the task. You use some cohesive devices like 'Additionally' and 'Through this,' which help the flow of ideas. However, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is a bit abrupt. Some sentences are slightly disjointed, and the use of referencing could be smoother. For example, 'Through this I can earn...' is a bit vague in its connection to the previous sentence. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear enough for the reader to follow without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'keen interest,' 'advertisement,' and 'affordable.' However, there are some awkward word choices and phrasing issues, such as 'I can gave 20% discount' (should be 'offer') and 'become the self-employed' (should be 'become self-employed'). The phrase 'under any employee' is also incorrect; you likely meant 'under an employer.' While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'I had 3 years' experience' (should be 'I have 3 years' experience'), 'at oxford school in the England' (should be 'at the Oxford School in England'), and 'when will be out for work' (should be 'when you are out at work'). There are also issues with article usage and verb tense consistency. While your meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevent a higher score.
