Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Patel,

I am writing to express my interest in teaching your kids my native language as per your advertisement.

Currently, I am a masters student in the university of this town. Hence, I am looking for someone to connect and share my experiences and culture with. I utilize my weekdays and Saturdays towards my studies. Therefor, my Sundays being free would work for both myself to teach and your children to get started with the learning.

Moreover, I would love to have your kids and your whole family too if possible over to the community center for our festivals. We manage to get-together and try to celebrate the events as per we would back home, in traditional dresses with native food. We offer free dance classes too for those of interested.

My major reason to apply for this position is utilize my time for something meaningful. In addition, I would love to expand my teaching and presentation skills. Lastly, I love to spend time around children so this would help me get my educational stress off my mind for a while.

I am looking for a positive response from your side.

Yours faithfully,

Jay Suthar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your suitability, offered additional help (inviting them to the community center), and provided reasons for wanting the job. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter of application. However, the development of ideas is slightly uneven; for instance, the explanation of why you are suitable is somewhat brief, and the connection between your studies and the teaching role could be more explicitly linked to the children's needs. Overall, the response is relevant and covers all requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'Lastly' to transition between points. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the sentence 'I am looking for someone to connect and share my experiences and culture with,' which is slightly confusing in context as you are applying for a job to teach, not seeking a friend. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. You use some appropriate phrases like 'express my interest' and 'native language'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'get my educational stress off my mind' (which is slightly informal/clunky) and 'as per we would back home' (which is grammatically awkward). While you attempt to use more descriptive language, some collocations are not entirely natural. However, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly throughout the letter without causing any misunderstanding.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'Therefor' (spelling), 'my Sundays being free would work' (awkward phrasing), and 'those of interested' (incorrect grammar). Additionally, 'I would love to have your kids and your whole family too if possible over' is a bit convoluted. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on refining sentence construction and proofreading for minor spelling and preposition errors.
