Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Ma'am/Sir,

I am writing this letter in regard to the advertisement for a language tutor to teach your two children for a year. I am very delighted in applying for this position as a tutor as I am a Native French speaker. I come from France and I have been studying Master of Literature in French.

I am also a qualified French teacher at High school. My educational and professional experience aligns with this job position. My passion for working with kids, engaging them in different activities in French language makes them learn the language fluently and efficiently.

Apart from my work experience as a fluent speaker in French, I am also a cook. I prepare different cuisines from home and cater tiffins for corporates. I am willing to prepare dishes for the family as well when needed.

I believe I would be a suitable candidate for this position considering my work experience and love for working with children. I look forward for the opportunity to discuss the position further.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your suitability by highlighting your background as a native French speaker and a qualified teacher. You also included an additional service (cooking) and provided clear reasons for wanting the job, such as your passion for working with children. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of application. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on your teaching methodology or specific experiences with children to make your application more persuasive and fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Apart from' and 'In addition', though the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect your sentences more fluidly. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the message.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'qualified', 'professional experience', and 'aligns with'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'studying Master of Literature' (should be 'studying for a Master's degree in Literature') and 'cater tiffins for corporates' (which is slightly informal and specific to certain regions). To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid slightly awkward phrasing. The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your meaning clearly throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'I am very delighted in applying' (should be 'delighted to apply') and 'I look forward for the opportunity' (should be 'look forward to the opportunity'). Additionally, 'French language' should be preceded by 'the'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do indicate a need for more careful proofreading of prepositions and verb patterns to reach a higher band.
