Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Sharma,
I am writing to inform you that I saw your advert in a local newspaper and I am interested to teach Indian language to your kids. I have just completed my graduation in linguisitic skills and wanted to apply for this position to make the optimum use of skills and earn my living.
Firstly, I find myself suitable for this job position as I have studied several languages in my university and been a volunteer worker throughout my university as tutor in private coaching center located in Melbourne. I have provided training in different languages such as English, French, Hindi and Punjabi to more than 500 students. I have been in this profession from last five years and achieved excellent communicative skills and command over various languages.
Secondly, I can provide one on one coaching as it will be helpful for kids to learn from basics as studying in a large classes often lowers the confidence for the newcomers. So, initial classes will be provided privately. Moreover, I can provide home classes too as it will be easier for kids to get familiar with me in a family atmosphere and will be helpful in boosting their confidence.
I hope you to consider my application. Looking forward to hear from you soon.
Best Wishes,
Sam.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your suitability by highlighting your background in linguistics and tutoring experience. You also suggested additional services, such as home-based, one-on-one coaching, and provided clear reasons for wanting the job, such as utilizing your skills and earning a living. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that the 'reasons for wanting the job' are expanded slightly more to show personal motivation beyond just financial gain, perhaps by mentioning an interest in cultural exchange or working with children specifically.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use transition signals such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Moreover' to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of cohesive devices; some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Additionally, ensure that the connection between sentences is always smooth, as some transitions feel like they are simply listing points rather than building a cohesive narrative.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'linguistic skills', 'optimum use', and 'communicative skills'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'I am interested to teach' (should be 'interested in teaching') and 'I have been in this profession from last five years' (should be 'for the last five years'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the more sophisticated, natural collocations that would characterize a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'I hope you to consider my application' is incorrect (should be 'I hope you will consider' or 'I hope for you to consider'), and 'Looking forward to hear from you' should be 'Looking forward to hearing from you'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on verb patterns and prepositional usage to improve accuracy.
