Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Sharma,

I am writing to inform you that I saw your advert in a local newspaper and I am interested in teaching Indian language to your kids. I have just completed my graduation in linguistic skills and wanted to apply for this position to make the optimum use of my skills and earn my living.

Firstly, I find myself suitable for this job position as I have studied several languages in my university and have been a volunteer worker throughout my university as a tutor in a private coaching center located in Melbourne. I have provided training in different languages such as English, French, Hindi and Punjabi to more than 500 students. I have been in this profession for the last five years and achieved excellent communicative skills and command over various languages.

Secondly, I can provide one on one coaching as it will be helpful for kids to learn from the basics as studying in large classes often lowers the confidence for the newcomers. So, initial classes will be provided privately. Moreover, I can provide home classes too as it will be easier for kids to get familiar with me in a family atmosphere and will be helpful in boosting their confidence.

I hope you will consider my application. Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Best Wishes,

Sam.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt effectively. You explained your suitability by highlighting your linguistic background and tutoring experience, suggested additional services like home-based coaching, and provided clear reasons for wanting the job. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, ensure you expand slightly more on the 'what else you could do' aspect, perhaps by mentioning light household help or cultural activities, to fully develop the ideas beyond just the teaching aspect.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You have used transition signals such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Moreover' to guide the reader through your arguments. The paragraphing is appropriate, and each paragraph focuses on a single clear idea. To improve, ensure that the connection between sentences is more varied; while the current cohesive devices are functional, they are somewhat standard. Using a wider range of referencing and linking phrases would enhance the flow further.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'optimum use of my skills' and 'family atmosphere' are well-chosen. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'Indian language' (which is imprecise, as India has many languages) and 'completed my graduation' (which is slightly unnatural; 'completed my degree' is more standard). To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid slightly repetitive phrasing when describing your teaching experience.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your meaning is consistently clear. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'I have been a volunteer worker throughout my university' (should be 'throughout my time at university') and 'lowers the confidence for the newcomers' (should be 'lowers the confidence of newcomers'). Despite these occasional errors, your control over grammar is generally good, and the errors do not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures would help push your score higher.
