Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my interest in the advertisement you post. I would be a suitable candidate to teach my language to your children.

There are a number of reasons for my suitability for this role. First, this is my native language and I am using this since my birth. I have great command on the language. In addition, I am working as a teacher in the school so I have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. I also know how to deal with children as I have been teaching them since two years.

I can also take care of your children when you are absent from the home in addition to teaching. I can also contribute to household chores if needed. I am willingly to help you in any sector where I can assist.

I want this job because I want to explore the Australia and interested to know about the lifestyle and culture. I think it will be great opportunity to see Australian culture and lifestyle closely while teaching your children. Additionally, I want to explore some natural places and eye-catching views.

I hope you will consider my application. I will wait to hear back from you.

Yours faithfully,

Mittu

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your suitability by highlighting your native language proficiency and teaching experience. You also offered additional help with household chores and childcare, and provided clear reasons for wanting the position, specifically your interest in Australian culture. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening salutation 'Dear Sir or Madam' is slightly generic given the prompt mentions a 'couple'. Using 'Dear Mr and Mrs [Name]' or 'Dear Parents' would have been more personal and effective. Overall, the ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear structure. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'First', and 'Additionally' to link your ideas. While the progression is logical, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that transitions between sentences are smoother. For instance, the jump between teaching experience and household chores is a bit abrupt. However, the paragraphing is appropriate and the overall message is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'interpersonal skills', 'suitability', and 'native language'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation. For example, you wrote 'I am using this since my birth' (should be 'I have spoken this language since birth') and 'I am willingly to help' (should be 'I am willing to help'). Additionally, 'explore the Australia' is incorrect; it should simply be 'explore Australia'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher band level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'advertisement you post' (should be 'advertised' or 'posted'), 'teaching them since two years' (should be 'for two years'), and 'I am working as a teacher in the school' (should be 'at a school'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause confusion for the reader. To improve, focus on verb tenses and preposition usage. Increasing your control over complex sentence structures would help elevate your score in this criterion.
