Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr and Mrs. Smith,
I am writing this letter to apply or a job as a Punjabi Gurmukhi tutor. I have seen an advertisement that both of you are looking for a professional expert in a Punjabi Gurmukhi language and I assure you that I'm the best match for it.
Firstly, I have recently completed my Master's in Gurmukhi literature and have a hand on experience for almost 3 years while studying, I worked as a part-time tutor in a reputed firm in my country. Well, I have a diploma in Early childhood education and I can not only teach the kids with patience but I can also understand their mental ability and behavioural emotions.
Secondly, I can be a great help for the whole family as I can take care of the kids for a whole day without disturbing your job schedules. Moreover, I have a experience in juggling between different activities at the same time, so I can be a great help. For example, I can teach the kids spiritual poetries and even explaining them the meaning behind the Gurmukhi verses mentioned in the holy book, 'Adi Granth'.
Lastly, I need this job urgently as it has been difficult for me to manage my expenses. Furthermore, this job will provide me an international teaching experience which will help me when I will pursue my Phd in Gurmukhi literature.
I am hoping for a positive response.
Yours faithfully,
Harman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your suitability by highlighting your Master's degree and experience in early childhood education. You also provided relevant details about how you could assist the family beyond teaching, such as managing activities and providing childcare. Finally, your reasons for wanting the job—financial necessity and professional development for your future PhD—are clearly stated. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that your opening is slightly more natural; for example, instead of saying 'I am writing this letter to apply or a job', ensure you proofread for minor typos.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. You have used paragraphing effectively to separate the different requirements of the task. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Moreover', and 'Lastly' helps guide the reader through your arguments. While the structure is sound, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking phrases rather than relying heavily on list-based transitions. Overall, the information is easy to follow, and the relationship between ideas is clear throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the context, such as 'reputed firm', 'early childhood education', and 'behavioural emotions'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'spiritual poetries' (poetry is an uncountable noun) and 'a experience' (should be 'an experience'). However, these errors do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. Your ability to discuss specific academic and professional concepts shows a solid command of the language, which is sufficient for this task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'apply or a job' (typo for 'for') and 'explaining them the meaning' (should be 'explaining the meaning to them'). Additionally, there are minor issues with articles and pluralization, such as 'a experience'. Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are clear and error-free. Your control of punctuation is generally good, and the meaning is never obscured by your grammatical choices.
