Dear .................. ,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Pam,
I am writing this letter to show my interest for a job, that was advertised in last Sunday's newsletter. I am more than happy to teach Hindi language efficiently to your children.
First and foremost, I would like to introduce my language proficiency in Hindi by drawing attention to my honesty to Hindi language. Almost 5 years ago. I was awarded as a second winner for novel writing at state level in "Gujarat Sahitya Lekhan" competition. I do understand the significance of native language for our children's nurturing, as I have raised my daughter in Australia too.
In addition to this, I am aware of the fact that children should learn cultural activity and religious lessons. I am happily interested to keep them updated with Hindi Shlokas from religious book, that might be helpful grammatically and spiritually both.
Honestly, I am desperate for this job as I am waiting for education courses, which are starting next December. Therefore, to balance my financial condition for the whole year, I was looking for some fun job with creativity.
Hopefully you would like my personality and language proficiency, and allow me to do a job.

| Criterion | Band |

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly explain your suitability by highlighting your award-winning writing background and your experience raising a child in Australia. You also suggest additional contributions, such as teaching cultural and religious lessons, and provide a clear reason for wanting the job. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, ensure that your reasons for wanting the job are more professional; mentioning that you are 'desperate' for a job to 'balance my financial condition' can sound slightly unprofessional in a formal application. Focusing on your passion for education or cultural exchange would be more persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'In addition to this', and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by ensuring each paragraph focuses strictly on one aspect of the prompt. The flow between sentences is generally smooth, though some phrasing, such as 'I am writing this letter to show my interest for a job', is slightly clunky, which affects the overall natural progression of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proficiency', 'significance', and 'nurturing'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'honesty to Hindi language' is not a standard expression; 'dedication to' or 'passion for' would be more natural. Similarly, 'second winner' is better expressed as 'runner-up'. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, the occasional misuse of collocations prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Expanding your use of more precise, natural-sounding phrases would enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are recurring grammatical errors. For instance, 'I am writing this letter to show my interest for a job' should be 'interest in a job'. There are also issues with article usage and punctuation, such as the fragment 'Almost 5 years ago. I was awarded...' and the incorrect use of commas in '...religious book, that might be helpful'. These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
