Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Gill

I am writing this letter in regards to your advertisement in yesterday's Australian Times newspaper.

I feel myself a good fit for this job because i am a native Punjabi speaker. As, i have learnt this language since my childhood, so i know it in depth with all the grammatical range, which makes me suitable for this job.

i could not only provide weekdays classes to your kids, but also will be available at weekends on a discounted price. Apart from it, i am a professional cook and can help your family in the kitchen if in case you need me.

As i am an international student here and only the earning person for myself. I already have one job in a restaurant as a cook, but need some additional income in order to pay my bills, tuition fees, rent and many more things. So, i really need this job to be independent here.

I hope you will consider me for this job and look forward to your reply.

Yours sincerely,

Sandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining your suitability, offering additional help, and providing reasons for wanting the job. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, while you mention being a native speaker, you could have elaborated more on your teaching approach or experience with children to make your application more compelling. The reasons for wanting the job are clear, but the focus on your financial needs is quite direct; balancing this with a stronger emphasis on your passion for teaching would improve the persuasive quality of the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. Paragraphing is used to separate the different requirements of the task, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices like 'Apart from it' and 'As i am', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly unnatural. The referencing is generally clear, and the progression of ideas from your suitability to your additional skills and finally your motivation is logical. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of linking words to connect your sentences more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'advertisement', 'native speaker', and 'professional cook'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'provide weekdays classes' (should be 'provide weekday classes') and 'only the earning person for myself' (which is awkward phrasing). The vocabulary is functional but lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing when describing your financial situation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Specifically, there are consistent issues with capitalization (e.g., 'i' instead of 'I'), comma splices, and article usage (e.g., 'on a discounted price' should be 'at a discounted price'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are noticeable and occur throughout the text. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions. Increasing your control over basic sentence mechanics will significantly improve your score.
