Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter in response of an advertisement posted by you in the "Hindustan Times". My name is Himanshu and I am a student of BSC. third semester. As you are looking for a tutor for your children to teach them Punjabi, I introduce myself as a suitable candidate.

I have been living in Punjab for last 20 years and communicating in native language. Punjabi is my mother tongue and I acquire a great skill to teach others as well. I, myself, have learned this language as a compulsory subject in my school with a good percentage. I also work voluntary with local committees who teach Punjabi to toddlers.

Apart from teaching the mentioned language, I can help in teaching other subjects as well such as basic Math and Science. In order to ensure that your children pay significant interest, I can make some visual tutorials including animation.

I have great aspires to teach my native culture to people around the world. Teaching local language is also part of that. Moreover, I am focusing on earning some extra so that I can buy a new laptop. tutoring seems the best as along with my studies I can easily concentrate.

I hope for a consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Himanshu

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explain your suitability by highlighting your background as a native Punjabi speaker and your experience with local committees. You also suggest additional help with Math and Science, and provide clear personal reasons for wanting the job, such as your interest in cultural exchange and your financial goal. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the salutation 'Dear Sir' is slightly generic given the prompt specifies a 'couple'. Overall, the ideas are well-developed and the response fulfills the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Apart from', 'In order to', and 'Moreover' to link your sentences. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that transitions between sentences are smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the letter follows a standard structure, which contributes to the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'candidate', 'voluntary', and 'significant'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation that prevent a higher score. For example, you use 'acquire a great skill' instead of 'possess' or 'have developed', and 'great aspires' instead of 'great aspirations'. Additionally, 'earning some extra' is slightly informal and incomplete. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage and a better understanding of word forms and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. For instance, 'in response of' should be 'in response to', 'living in Punjab for last 20 years' is missing an article ('the'), and 'tutoring seems the best as along with my studies I can easily concentrate' is somewhat awkward and lacks clarity. While these errors are noticeable, they do not significantly hinder the reader's understanding. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct preposition usage, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed accurately.
