Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or madam,

I am writing a letter to you after seeing the advertisement in the newspaper for teach the Gujarati language to your children for one year. Moreover, I am very excited to teach my own language to your children.

Firstly, as I am living in Australia from last two years however, I am from India and my first language is Gujarati so I am fluent speaker of that also I feel very proud to teach my own language to your kids.

Secondly, I like to spend my time with children and always feel to support them when they need it. Furthermore, I can help your kids with their homework, regular activity such as feeding and playing games with them. I can take care of their meals and medication too.

Lastly, I like this job role because I can learn from them about the Australian culture and language and teach them mine Indian culture and language. I think this is the great opportunity for me to learn more about Australia.

Thank you so much for your time and consideration. I hope I can hear back from you.

Yours Faithfully,

Kiara Boss

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points: explaining suitability, offering additional help, and stating reasons for wanting the job. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening salutation 'Dear Sir or Madam' is slightly generic given the prompt mentions a 'couple'. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the development of the 'additional help' section could be more sophisticated. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific requirement of the prompt. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Furthermore', and 'Lastly' helps to guide the reader through the text. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a letter format. The overall structure is sound and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'I am living in Australia from last two years' and 'fluent speaker of that'. While the range is sufficient to communicate the message, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands. The word choices are generally functional but could be more varied and sophisticated to better suit a professional application.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'for teach' instead of 'to teach', 'I am living... from last two years' instead of 'I have been living... for the last two years', and 'the great opportunity' instead of 'a great opportunity'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the reader's understanding of the message. The punctuation is generally correct, but the control over verb tenses and prepositions needs improvement.
