Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr Smith,

I am writing to express my keen interest in your advertisement for a native language tutor for your two children in Australia. I believe my background and skills make me an idea candidate for this year-long position.

Regarding my suitability, I am a certified language instructor with over thre years of experience teaching young learners. I employ interactive, play-based methods to keep children motivated and engaged while mastering a new language. My patience and adaptable teaching style ensure that lessons are tailored to each child's individual learning pace.

In addition to language tutoring, I would be delighted to assist your family in other ways. Having worked as a arttime camp counselor, I can organize fun outdoor activities, help the children with their homework, and prepare healthy afternoon snacks. I am also happy to help them keep common areas tidy.

My primary motivation for seeking this role is my long-standing desire to experience life in Australia while continuing my passion for childcare. This opportunity would allow me to fully immerse myself in your culture while providing your children with a valuable, native-speaking educational foundation.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the possibility of discussing how I can support your family.

Yours sincerely,

Prapti Shastri

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain your suitability by highlighting your certification and experience with young learners. You also provide a comprehensive list of additional services, such as organizing activities and helping with homework, and clearly articulate your motivation for wanting the job, which is to experience Australian culture. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant throughout. You have successfully met all the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the letter easy to follow. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'Regarding my suitability', 'In addition to', and 'My primary motivation' to transition between points effectively. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall clarity of the message. The flow is natural, and the relationship between ideas is consistently clear throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for this task. Phrases such as 'keen interest', 'interactive, play-based methods', 'tailored to each child's individual learning pace', and 'educational foundation' show a strong command of language. There are a few minor spelling errors, such as 'idea' instead of 'ideal', 'thre' instead of 'three', and 'arttime' instead of 'part-time'. While these are noticeable, they do not impede communication or detract significantly from the overall quality of your writing. The vocabulary is generally precise and fits the context well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Having worked as a part-time camp counselor, I can organize...' and 'This opportunity would allow me to...'. The grammar is generally accurate, and your control over punctuation and sentence construction is strong. Most of your sentences are error-free, and the few minor slips (like the spelling errors mentioned in the lexical section) do not affect the clarity of your message. You demonstrate a solid grasp of English grammar, which allows you to express your ideas fluently.
