Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

Hi, I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter in response to your advertisement to teach your two children in my native language for a year. I am interested in this opportunity and would be able to teach your children to develop their language skills.

I am native speaker of Punjabi as well as I have a good command of English language. I have experienced to teach with children before as I am understanding how to learning, enjoying and engaging. I believe that children can learn the language more effectively with communication, stories, games and songs in regular routine. I would prefer to provide lessons according to their ages appropriates and interest level as children can easily built up their curiosity level to learn the new things.

Apart from teaching, I could also support their family in several ways. I would assist children in especially homework, prepare simple educational activities and explore the new ambience for children where they feel secure and safer. Living with Australian family can help me to develop my skills and connection with new culture.

I would appreciate if it could provide me further details about the working hours, salary, accommodation and children current level of Punjabi language I look forward your hearing from you and hope to have the opportunity to work with your family.

Best Regards

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explain your suitability by highlighting your native language skills and teaching approach. You also suggest additional ways to support the family, such as helping with homework and creating a secure environment. Your reasons for wanting the job are also addressed. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, although the salutation 'Dear Sir or Madam' is slightly generic given the prompt mentions a 'couple'. Overall, the response is well-developed and fully addresses the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Apart from teaching' and 'I would appreciate', to link your thoughts. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes a bit mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the slightly awkward transition in the final paragraph. Despite these minor issues, the overall structure is coherent and the message is clear throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. You use relevant terms like 'native speaker', 'curiosity level', and 'educational activities'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'experienced to teach with children' (should be 'experience teaching children') and 'children current level' (should be 'children's current level'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations to reach a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'I am understanding how to learning' (should be 'I understand how to teach'), 'ages appropriates' (should be 'appropriate ages'), and 'I look forward your hearing' (should be 'I look forward to hearing'). These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct preposition usage, and consistent verb tense application.
