Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

In reference to your advertisement on Linked, I wish to apply for the position of a Bini language tutor.

I am a citizen of Nigeria, and hail from Benin City, which make the Bini language my mother tongue.

I believe I am the best candidate for this job as I have more than 6 years experience as a Bini language tutor. Also I have taught children from ages 5 to 14 years, who have become fluent and competent speakers of thr language. Distance is not a barrier as the classes are entirely online.

Additionally, I studied mathematics for my bachelors degree, your kids can join my club every Wednesday for free. At the club I assist kids with easy steps and formulas that makes mathematics fun to learn.

The job would be of great value to me, as I intend to further my studies by going for my masters program soon as the pay would help with my tuition.

I look forward to getting a favourable response from you.

Yours faithfully,

Aigbavboa Izere Augustina

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining your suitability, offering additional help, and stating your reasons for wanting the job. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention your experience, providing a specific example of a teaching method or a success story would have strengthened your argument. Additionally, you addressed the letter to 'Sir/Madam' rather than the requested 'Dear [Name/Couple]', which is a minor oversight in following instructions. Overall, the response is relevant and covers all requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a formal closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'Also' to transition between ideas. However, the flow could be improved with more varied linking words to connect sentences more fluidly. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, which helps the reader follow your argument. The structure is clear and easy to navigate, meeting the requirements for a coherent response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluent', 'competent', and 'favourable response'. There are a few minor errors, such as 'Linked' instead of 'LinkedIn' and 'thr' instead of 'the'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the range of less common or idiomatic expressions that would push the score into the higher bands. The word choice is generally accurate and appropriate for the context of a job application.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'which make' (should be 'makes') and 'your kids can join' (a comma splice error; it should be a semicolon or a new sentence). Additionally, 'masters program' should be 'master's program'. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and punctuation, particularly when joining independent clauses.
