Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Mehak. I am from Canada. I am writing this letter to express my concern regarding the reply of your advertisement, I saw this morning. It mentioned that you required an English speaking tutor for your child as you are from Italy.

I believe that i would be right person for teaching your child. The reason behind this is that I am learning English since i was a child and i am in Canada since 8 years. Because of this reason English became my first language and I am a professional English speaker now. The other best part is I can provide e-books to your child on my own. You do not need to buy it. The book i provide is very helpful and easy for the beginners. I need this job as it will enhance my skills and a good opportunity to help your child in understanding my language.

It would be great if you hire me as a teacher for your child. I will work beyond your expectations and you yourself will feel a change in your child spoken in just 1 week.

Thank You,

Yours Faithfully,

Mehak

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt, which is a positive start. You explained your suitability by highlighting your language background, mentioned the provision of e-books as an additional service, and stated your motivation for the job. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why you want the job is quite brief and could be expanded to sound more professional. Additionally, there is a misunderstanding of the prompt: you addressed the letter to 'Sir/Madam' rather than the couple mentioned in the instructions, and you incorrectly assumed the children were from Italy, whereas the prompt states the couple lives in Australia. This indicates a need for closer attention to detail in the task instructions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices like 'The reason behind this is' and 'The other best part is' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved to better separate your different points. The use of referencing is generally clear, but the transition between the introduction and the body could be smoother. Overall, the message is easy to follow, but the range of cohesive devices is somewhat limited, which prevents a higher score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your points clearly. You use some relevant terms such as 'professional English speaker' and 'enhance my skills'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are some awkward phrasings, such as 'express my concern regarding the reply of your advertisement'. A more natural phrasing would be 'express my interest in your advertisement'. You also rely on simple vocabulary throughout the letter. To improve, you should aim to incorporate more varied and precise language to describe your qualifications and your enthusiasm for the role, rather than relying on repetitive sentence structures and basic adjectives.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the quality of your writing. For example, 'I am learning English since i was a child' should be 'I have been learning English since I was a child', and 'i am in Canada since 8 years' should be 'I have been in Canada for 8 years'. Additionally, there are consistent issues with capitalization, such as the lowercase 'i' used throughout the text. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. Focusing on verb tenses and basic punctuation rules will significantly improve your accuracy.
