Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to take the opportunity for the job, regarding the advertisement which you had given XYZ newspaper for teaching the French language for your two children.

As of now, I am working with similar type of job and teaching the French language to three children of Irish couple a. I have completed my Master degree in French language, also I have a good experience of around 10 years of handling the children and teaching and household works.

I like the children company and very much comfortable and enjoy the spending time with children as besides helping them to learning new things same time we also learn many things from children as well. Besides teaching the children , I can help other household works as cleaning the house, prepare the foods and helping the kids for school and chilren home work.

I want to come Australia as well as my sister also staying the same city and it will give me pleasure to spend time with my sister on my free time.

I am looking for positive response for this job opportunity and also feeling very excited to come Australia. If need any additional info, please does not hesitate and can e-mail or call me.

Yours sincerely,

Amanda Jennings

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: your suitability, additional help, and reasons for wanting the job. However, the tone is slightly inconsistent; you begin with 'Dear Sir or Madam' despite the prompt asking you to write to a 'couple' (implying you should use their names or a more personal greeting). While you explain your experience and willingness to help with household chores, the development is somewhat basic. To reach a higher band, ensure your tone is consistently professional yet warm, and provide more specific details about your teaching methodology or how your experience directly benefits their children.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, with each focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use some cohesive devices like 'As of now', 'Besides', and 'In addition', which help the flow. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical or repetitive. For example, the phrase 'Besides' is used twice in close proximity. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression between sentences is smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is clear enough for the reader to follow your points without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'opportunity', 'advertisement', and 'household works'. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'take the opportunity for the job' (instead of 'apply for the position') and 'like the children company' (instead of 'enjoy working with children'). Additionally, there are minor errors in collocation, such as 'prepare the foods' (should be 'prepare meals'). Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations and idiomatic expressions would help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the French language', 'the children company'), prepositions ('to come Australia'), and verb forms ('I am writing this letter to take the opportunity'). Some sentences are slightly disjointed, such as 'I have completed my Master degree in French language, also I have a good experience'. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct article usage will significantly improve your accuracy. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication.
