Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Karan Sidhu,

I am writing this letter that i have seen an advertisement on Instagram couple of days ego that you are looking someone who can teach your children Punjabi language.

I think i am perfect for this job because i did master degree in Punjabi. Moreover, Punjabi is my mother tongue, and i thought this language in government school since last six years. Furthermore, I knew very well how to teach children that they can take interest in study.

I can give discount on fees, and i can take care their children when you have urgent work outside your house during teaching time. I can help to build your off springs confidence, improve communication skills in Punjabi.

I am willing to this job because i love children and i fell really proud to teach my language. Although i have more job opportunities but i keen to enjoy this teaching job.

I am waiting your positive response,

Your faithfully,

Veerpal Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining your suitability, offering additional help, and stating your reasons for applying. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention your master's degree and experience, expanding slightly on your teaching methodology would have strengthened your suitability. The letter covers the requirements, but the content remains quite basic. To improve, ensure that each point is fully extended with specific details or examples to demonstrate a more comprehensive response to the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Although' to link ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural. For example, 'I am writing this letter that i have seen...' is grammatically awkward and affects the flow of the opening. Additionally, some sentences are short and choppy, which disrupts the overall progression. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that sentences flow more smoothly into one another would help achieve a higher band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'mother tongue', 'communication skills', and 'advertisement'. However, there are several instances of word choice errors or awkward phrasing, such as 'fell really proud' (instead of 'feel') and 'off springs' (which is not typically used in this context; 'children' is better). There is also a lack of more sophisticated or precise vocabulary that would demonstrate a wider range. Focusing on correct collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing will help improve your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Common issues include missing articles ('did master degree'), incorrect verb tenses ('i thought this language' instead of 'I have taught'), and preposition errors ('waiting your positive response' instead of 'waiting for'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement, correct tense usage for past experiences, and the inclusion of necessary articles and prepositions.
