Dear .................. ,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my interest in your advertisement regarding teaching the English language to your children.

Recently I have certified as a Master's in this language, and I can fulfill all your requirements from basic to intermediate skills. Not only this, I have five year experience in teaching English, by using different books which provide various grammatical examples, and stories, I try to create interest among students

For the family, I would offer them a reasonable price for the classes with flexible schedule which will be easy for you to manage. As I read in newspaper your schedule is totally occupied, so I would set my class according to your work timing. If you drop your children into my house will charge 10% less fee as I do not need to commute.

Regarding the important reasons, I am looking for part time job, and your advertisement for teaching, appears to be the suitable option because it is based on my skills. Furthermore, I am from a middle class family, I have to provide financial support to my parents, so in such case this job will help me to earn income.

I will look forward to your kind response.

Yours Sincerely

Supreet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining your suitability, offering additional help, and stating your reasons for wanting the job. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. For instance, the explanation of your suitability is clear, but the section regarding 'what else you could do' focuses heavily on financial discounts rather than additional services for the family. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are more fully extended and relevant to the specific context of helping a family in Australia, rather than focusing primarily on your own financial needs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Furthermore' and 'Regarding', to transition between ideas. However, the flow within paragraphs is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing, such as the transition between your teaching experience and the offer of a flexible schedule. The use of referencing is generally clear, but the connection between sentences could be smoother to improve the overall progression of the letter. Ensure that cohesive devices are used to link ideas more naturally rather than just acting as signposts.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'certified', 'flexible schedule', and 'financial support'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'I have certified as a Master's' (should be 'I have obtained a Master's degree') and 'your schedule is totally occupied' (which sounds slightly unnatural; 'busy' or 'demanding' would be better). While you attempt to use more specific vocabulary, some phrasing remains basic. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that your word choices are contextually natural for a formal letter of application.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as missing articles ('I have five year experience' should be 'five years of experience') and issues with sentence construction, particularly in the second paragraph: 'If you drop your children into my house will charge 10% less fee'. These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles to enhance the accuracy of your writing.
