Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am pleased to write to you this letter explaining why I think I would be a great French teacher for your children. I was scrolling through my phone one Saturday afternoon and I saw an advertisement for a French teacher in Syndney,Australia. I finally decided to gather the courage to send in my application.
To begin with,I graduated with honors in French from a prestige University five years ago.My family and I moved to Australia last month to start a new life here. Unfortunately, I have not been able to secure a job yet although I am looking forward to this. Not to blow my own horn, I was the best student in my class and I also became the valedictorian for my college back in school.
Furthermore, aside teaching your children , I can also babysit them if you would want me to. I really need this job to be able to support my husband financially since we have already spent a lot of money on our immigration journey.
I hope to hear from you.
Yours faithfully,
Emmanuella.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The candidate has successfully addressed all parts of the task. The letter covers why she is suitable for the job, mentioning her French degree and valedictorian status. It also suggests what else she could do for the family, specifically offering to babysit, and clearly states her reasons for wanting the job, noting her need to support her husband financially after immigration expenses. However, there is a minor error in the salutation convention: the prompt specified to begin the letter as 'Dear .................. ,', meaning a specific name or couple reference (e.g., Dear Mr and Mrs Smith,) should have been used instead of 'Dear Sir,', as she is writing to a specific couple from an advertisement. Despite this minor misjudgement of convention, all bullet points are well covered and ideas are clearly extended.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter maintains a clear overall progression, with distinct paragraphs addressing different parts of the prompt. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, such as 'To begin with,' and 'Furthermore,'. However, paragraphing could be slightly better managed, as the transition between finding the advertisement and discussing her qualifications is somewhat abrupt. Referencing is generally clear, and the letter reads naturally as a personal response, though the mechanical use of certain transition phrases slightly limits higher-level cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The candidate demonstrates an adequate and flexible range of vocabulary suited to the task, using terms such as 'valedictorian', 'immigration journey', and 'secure a job'. There are a few spelling and word choice inaccuracies, such as misspelling 'Sydney' as 'Syndney' and using 'prestige University' instead of the adjective 'prestigious'. Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended message clearly without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including subordinate clauses such as 'although I am looking forward to this' and 'since we have already spent a lot of money'. There are some grammatical and punctuation errors, including a missing space after a comma ('To begin with,I') and minor awkwardness in phrasing like 'aside teaching your children'. Nevertheless, the majority of sentences are clear and grammatically sound, and errors do not impede communication.
