Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my interest about teaching a language to your children for a year that I have seen through an advertisement from Australian couple. I am suitable for this job because I have a good german skills and I have a more than 7 years of teaching experience.

I can easily teach them while playing or via story telling in which they will feel more involve. I have already tought german to another students in just couple of months. So, I will improve their communication skills too that may help them in the future. I will also arrange a seminar during the weekends that other family members can join in free of cost.

Currently, I need this job because I have to pay my master's fees and I have enough time to do a job. Whereas, I do not prefer to do full time job as I am a student now. It would be easy for me to get two hours per day.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Dhwani Thummar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The student successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. First, the writer explains their suitability for the job by mentioning German language skills and over seven years of teaching experience. Second, they propose additional services, such as interactive storytelling and organizing free weekend seminars for other family members. Third, the writer clearly states their reasons for wanting the job, specifically noting the need to pay master's fees and the flexibility of working part-time hours as a student. The tone of the letter is appropriate, although the opening salutation 'Dear Sir or Madam' contradicts the instruction to write to 'a couple' (where 'Dear Mr and Mrs [Name]' or 'Dear couple' or a greeting like 'Dear parents' would fit better, but the content remains fully on-task). All parts are well covered, earning a solid band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each handling a distinct part of the task prompt. Introduction, suitability, additional contributions, personal reasons, and the sign-off are all separated appropriately. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'First', 'Currently', and 'Whereas'. However, some minor referencing and cohesion issues are evident, such as starting a sentence with 'Whereas, I do not prefer...', which misuses 'whereas' as a conjunction/transition at the start of a new independent sentence. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, and there is a clear logical progression throughout the writing, allowing the reader to follow the train of thought easily without confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'express my interest', 'communication skills', and 'interactive storytelling' concepts. However, there are notable word choice and phrasing errors throughout the text, such as 'express my interest about teaching' (instead of 'in teaching'), 'good german skills' (unnecessary article 'a' with plural/uncountable construction), and 'tought' (a spelling error for 'taught'). Furthermore, phrases like 'more involve' should be 'more involved'. Despite these noticeable errors, the vocabulary remains minimally adequate and communication is never impeded.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'in which they will feel more involve' and 'that may help them in the future'). Grammatical accuracy fluctuates. There are several noticeable errors, including 'a good german skills' (article error and lowercase capitalization), 'tought' (spelling/morphology), 'another students' (should be 'other students'), and the structural misuse of 'Whereas' at the start of the third paragraph. Punctuation is generally fine, but sentence control weakens when attempting more complex phrasing. These errors occasionally cause minor distractions for the reader, fitting the Band 6 profile well.
