Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing regarding your advertisement for someone to teach your two children my language for a year. The purpose of this letter is to apply for the position and explain why I would be suitable for the job, and I would like to provide some further details.
To begin with, I believe that I would be suitable for this position because I am a fluent speaker of the language and I am patient when explaining new concepts to children. I believe this information is particularly relevant and helps to explain the matter more clearly.
Furthermore, I would be happy to help your children with their schoolwork and organise educational activities so that they can continue learning outside their language lessons. This is an important point to consider, and I hope it will be taken into account.
Finally, the main reason for wanting this job is that I enjoy helping children learn and would also value the opportunity to gain teaching experience. I hope this information will be useful and lead to a satisfactory outcome.
Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. I would appreciate your consideration and look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Jay

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all bullet points outlined in the prompt. The writer explains why they are suitable for the job by mentioning fluency and patience with children. They also state what else they can do by offering to help with schoolwork and organise educational activities, and clearly provide reasons for wanting the job, such as gaining teaching experience. All parts of the task are adequately addressed and supported with relevant details, demonstrating a clear focus throughout. The content is well-organised and appropriate for a general task 1 letter. Therefore, this performance meets the criteria for Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end. The writer uses standard salutations and sign-offs appropriate for the task type. Paragraphing is used effectively, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct point from the prompt. Cohesive devices are employed adequately, such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally', which help guide the reader through the text. However, some of the linking phrases feel a bit formulaic and slightly repetitive in their metadiscourse ('This is an important point to consider', 'I hope this information will be useful'). Despite these minor stylistic limitations, the overall progression is clear and logical, warranting a Band 7.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using functional terms such as 'advertisement', 'educational activities', and 'satisfactory outcome'. Word choice is generally appropriate, and the message is conveyed without any impediment to understanding. However, the vocabulary tends to be somewhat safe and repetitive rather than demonstrating a wide or flexible range of less common lexical items. Phrases like 'explain why I would be suitable for the job' echo the prompt directly rather than rephrasing with greater lexical resource. Spelling and word formation are entirely accurate, supporting a solid Band 6.0 performance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The writer uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over grammatical structures. Examples of complex sentences include 'I am writing regarding your advertisement for someone to teach your two children my language for a year' and 'organise educational activities so that they can continue learning outside their language lessons.' Grammatical accuracy is high, with error-free sentences dominating the response. Punctuation is used correctly throughout the letter. The control of grammar and the variety of structures comfortably place this response at a Band 7.0 level.
