Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mam,
I am writing in response to your advertisement seeking someone to teach your children my language for a year. I am very interested in this opportunity and believe that my experience, patience and enthusiasm would make me well suited to the position.
I have a strong interest in teaching children and have previously helped young learners develop their language skills. I am patient and approachable, and i understand that children learn most efffectively when lessons are engaging rather than overly formal. I would therefore use a combination of conversations, stories, games and everyday activities to help your children develop their vocabulary, pronunciation and confidence in using my language.
Besides teaching, I would be delighted to contribute to family life. I could help the children with their homework, prepare simple meals, accompany them to the park or other activities, and intriduce them to my country's culture, traditions and cuisine. I would also be willing to assist with light household responsibilities whenever appropriate.
Yours faithfully,
navdeep Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively covers all parts of the prompt in a well-developed and clear manner. The writer successfully addresses why they are suitable for the job, detailing relevant experience and personal qualities such as patience and enthusiasm. Furthermore, the candidate clearly states what else they could do for the family, offering practical assistance like preparing simple meals, helping with homework, and introducing the children to their culture and cuisine. Finally, the reasons for wanting the job are implicit in the enthusiasm for teaching children and cultural exchange. The tone is appropriate for a general letter, opening with a polite greeting and closing formally. All bullet points are fully addressed, and ideas are extended appropriately to meet the communicative purpose.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter demonstrates a clear and logical organisation from beginning to end. Information is grouped into appropriate paragraphs, with each paragraph serving a distinct function: the introduction sets out the purpose of the letter, the second paragraph explains suitability and teaching methods, and the third outlines additional help. Cohesive devices are used appropriately, such as 'Besides teaching' and 'I would also be willing to', ensuring a smooth progression of ideas. Paragraphing is managed effectively, and referencing throughout the text is clear, making the letter very easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The candidate uses an adequate and natural range of vocabulary suitable for a general task. Phrases such as 'in response to your advertisement', 'engage young learners', and 'contribute to family life' demonstrate a good level of control. There are a few minor spelling errors, such as 'efffectively' and 'intriduce', but these are occasional slips and do not impede communication. Less common lexical items are attempted with some awareness of style and collocation, showing a sufficient range to convey precise meaning regarding teaching methods and daily activities.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The writing features a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over grammatical structures. Examples such as 'I understand that children learn most effectively when lessons are engaging rather than overly formal' show the ability to construct multi-clause sentences accurately. Punctuation is generally well managed, though there is a minor lower-case 'i' used as a pronoun in the second paragraph ('and i understand'). The majority of sentences are grammatically accurate, and errors are rare enough that they do not cause any difficulty for the reader.
