Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Ms. Elisa,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing about the job advertisement that you posted on the internet. I intend to apply for the job.

First, I would like to introduce myself to you. I am Elsie Corpuz from the Philippines. I am currently in Sydney, Australia on an open work permit. The moment I saw your job posting online, I started organizing my resume, and write this cover letter. I believe that I am the most suitable for the job. This is because of my educational qualifications and childcare experience. For instance, I am a registered nurse both in the Philippines and Australia. Additionally, working in a children's hospital equipped me with the skills necessary to perform my job effectively and efficently. For example, working in the hospital exposed me to an environment where children have varying characteristics, and I learned on how to develop startegies to communicate with them.

Moreover, the substantial amount of experience that I gained working in various hospitals and day care centers have prepared me to take on more complex roles. Aside from basic child care, I can also assist young children with school activities. I saw from your advertisement that you are looking for someone who can help your 5 year old child with her school work.

Since I was in high school, I know that providing care for other people is what I would like to do. This is the main reason I choose Nursing as my undergraduate degree. Furthermore, working in a sector where I can see that I am able to help other is something I considered valuable.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Kind regards,

Elsie

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all parts of the task well. The candidate successfully explains suitability for the job by detailing her educational qualifications and background as a registered nurse. She also outlines what else she can do for the family, specifically mentioning that she can assist young children with school activities. Furthermore, she clearly gives her reasons for wanting the job, linking it to her long-standing desire to provide care for others. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. Although the letter begins with 'Dear Ms. Elisa,' which is slightly unusual given the advertisement was from a couple, all bullet points from the prompt are thoroughly addressed and developed, fulfilling the requirements for a Band 7.5 or Band 8 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, with an introductory greeting, an introduction of the candidate, a discussion of additional skills, and a concluding explanation of motivations. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'First,' 'Additionally,' 'For example,' 'Moreover,' and 'Furthermore.' However, some referencing and transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be slightly better balanced, as the second paragraph is quite long compared to the others. Nevertheless, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, supporting a solid Band 7 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The candidate demonstrates a sufficient and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task. Words and phrases such as 'educational qualifications,' 'open work permit,' 'equipped me with the skills,' and 'substantial amount of experience' show flexibility and precision. There are occasional awkward lexical choices or slight unnaturalness, such as 'write this cover letter' (tense shift after 'started organizing') and 'efficiently' (spelled 'efficentisch' or 'efficently' with a minor typo). Despite these minor errors, the vocabulary is adequate to convey precise meaning without impeding communication, fitting the Band 7 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The writer uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'The moment I saw your job posting online, I started organizing my resume...'). There are frequent error-free sentences, demonstrating good control of grammar. However, a few minor errors persist, such as the tense mismatch in 'started organizing my resume, and write this cover letter' (should be 'and writing') and the preposition usage in 'learned on how to develop strategies' (should be 'learned how to develop'). Punctuation is generally good, and these minor slips do not impede communication, placing the response firmly in the Band 7 category.
