Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I have seen your advertisement that you want someone who can teach your juveniles the original language for one year. I am pleased to inform you that i am also living in Australia. I am ready to do this job as i am free from my studies and i have enough time to teach your childern about our language.

Apart from teaching your childern, i can also help with you in the household chores if you have any job. Moreover, i will teach your juveniles in both oral and written ways for the quick learning. I will take care of them in your absence.

Furthermore, i want this job because we are originally from the same country and i can easily spend my with you and your childern. Teaching your childern will assist me to be patient and cooperative.

I will wait for your response and we can discuss all the things afterwards.

Yours Sincerely,

Kamalpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The candidate addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You successfully explained why you are suitable for the job by mentioning that you are free from studies, live in Australia, and have enough time to teach. You also covered what else you could do for the family, offering to help with household chores and supervise the children in their absence. Furthermore, you provided reasons for wanting the job, noting that you share the same country of origin and that teaching will help you develop patience and cooperation. However, the salutation is inappropriate given the prompt states you have seen an advertisement from a couple (Dear Sir/Madam is used rather than addressing them personally or neutrally). Ideas are generally relevant, but the development is somewhat basic. Overall, the task is adequately covered, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is divided into clear paragraphs, which helps organize the overall progression of ideas. You move logically from introducing your candidacy in the first paragraph, to offering additional help and teaching methods in the second, to your motivations in the third, and finally to closing the letter. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Apart from teaching', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore'. However, referencing is sometimes imprecise, as seen in the phrase 'help with you in the household chores' and 'spend my with you'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, but the mechanical nature of the transitions places this performance firmly at Band 6.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, but lacks flexibility and precision. You use some appropriate phrases like 'household chores' and 'in their absence', but there are noticeable inappropriate word choices and unnatural collocations. For example, referring to children as 'juveniles' is far too formal and sounds like legal or penal terminology rather than a family setting. Additionally, spelling and word-form errors occur, such as 'childern' instead of 'children' and the repetition of basic verbs. While communication is not impeded, the limitations in vocabulary range and the occurrence of inaccurate lexical choices restrict the score to Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conjunctions like 'because', 'as', and 'that' to connect clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the response. Examples include lowercase 'i' used as a personal pronoun multiple times, missing articles or incorrect prepositions ('help with you', 'spend my with you'), and awkward phrasing ('teach your juveniles in both oral and written ways for the quick learning'). The errors occasionally cause minor difficulty for the reader, but they do not obscure the overall meaning. Because simple sentences are controlled better than complex ones and errors are noticeable, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.
