Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope this letter finds you well.

I am writing formally in response to an advertisement published in yesterday's newspaper. I am from Italy, born and raised there. In my opinion, to teach a child a new language you need someone who has fluency in that language. As an Italian, I believe I would be suitable for this job. I also worked as a caregiver in a day-care for two years, therefor I know how to look after a juvenile.

Furthermore, I am a very calm and organized person I can help your children to organize their room and wardrobe. Also, I can facilitate you in your daily chores and assist you to purchase groceries from the supermarket. I have an international driving license, so I can drop and pick up the children to and from the school. Moreover, I can assist them to prepare small meals for them. By nature, I am very friendly and can adjust in new environment easily.

I moved to the Australia one year ago, therefore it would be beneficial for me to live with the local family so that I can learn about the culture and Australian cuisine. I am looking forward to hearing a positive response from you.

Thank you in advance.

Yours sincerely,

Martha John.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task effectively. You successfully explained why you are suitable for the job by mentioning your Italian background and prior experience as a caregiver. You also detailed what else you could do, such as organizing rooms, doing grocery shopping, driving the children to school, and preparing small meals. Finally, you clearly gave your reasons for wanting the job, which include living with a local family to learn about Australian culture and cuisine. The tone is mostly appropriate, although the opening salutation 'Dear Sir,' is slightly mismatched since the prompt states the advertisement was from 'a couple', so 'Dear Sir and Madam' or 'Dear Couple' would have been more precise. Overall, the ideas are well-selected and directly address the bullet points provided in the instructions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into three main paragraphs that mirror the structure of the prompt. Information flows reasonably well from suitability to additional duties and finally to reasons for applying. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Also', 'Moreover', and 'therefore' are used to connect ideas, though some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive in the second paragraph. Paragraphing is handled properly, separating the introduction, body details, and conclusion distinctly. However, referencing occasionally slips, such as the greeting 'Dear Sir,' which is addressed to an advertisement placed by a couple. Despite these minor cohesive flaws, the overall arrangement is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, successfully communicating everyday concepts. You utilized some less common items such as 'caregiver', 'facilitate', and 'international driving license'. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, using 'juvenile' to refer to children is unnatural and overly formal in this context. Similarly, writing 'facilitate you in your daily chores' is awkward; 'assist you with your daily chores' would be more natural. There is also a minor preposition error in 'moved to the Australia'. Despite these lexical slips, the vocabulary remains sufficient to convey your message clearly without impeding overall communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrated a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and conditional ideas effectively. There are several good error-free sentences, such as 'By nature, I am very friendly and can adjust in new environment easily.' However, a few grammatical errors are present throughout the text. There is a spelling and word-form error in 'theredor', which should be 'therefore'. Additionally, article misuse occurs in 'moved to the Australia' and missing pluralization or articles in 'drop and pick up the children to and from the school' and 'adjust in new environment'. Punctuation is generally controlled, but some run-on tendencies appear in the second paragraph. These errors do not impede communication, but they keep the score at a solid level six.
