Student answer (Band 5.5)
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Marley,
I am writing to inform you that I saw your advertisement on newspaper where you have mentioned about the coach you need for two of your children. I would like to help them through my coaching experience in Hindi Language.
I and my team have more than ten years of experience in teaching the prefer language in a more effective manner. Moreover, we recently got awarded for best coaching centre in the town.
Although coaching Centre is cost-effective, it never compromises to teaching practice available to students. As, you are living in different country, there is a online demo class which your children can take part on saturday evening.
I want this job because it is challenging and fun to teach other language to the children who never spoken that language, furthermore, we will have fun together while learning it.
Yours Sincerely,
Viren

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers all three bullet points from the prompt: you explain why you are suitable by mentioning your coaching experience, you suggest an alternative approach with online demo classes, and you state your reasons for wanting the job. However, there are two main issues. First, the length requirement of 150 words was not met, as the response contains 148 words. Second, there is confusion regarding your persona; you initially write as an individual applying for a job, but later switch to talking about 'I and my team' and an award-winning 'coaching centre'. This makes the purpose and audience slightly unclear. According to the descriptors, this reflects a partial address of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical paragraph structure, beginning with an appropriate salutation and closing. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Moreover', 'Although', and 'furthermore'. However, referencing becomes slightly confused when you introduce your team and coaching center mid-way through the letter, shifting the focus from a personal tutor position to a corporate offering. Paragraphing is generally appropriate, but the abrupt shift in perspective impacts the overall flow. Overall, the organization is sufficient to achieve coherence, but the mechanical transitions and shifting focus place it firmly at band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'cost-effective', 'challenging', and 'advertisement'. However, there are several lexical errors and awkward collocations that affect precision. For example, you wrote 'saw your advertisement on newspaper' (instead of 'in a newspaper'), 'prefer language' (instead of 'preferred language'), and 'never spoken that language' (instead of 'have never spoken'). While these errors do not severely impede communication, they highlight limitations in word choice and phrasing that prevent the score from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the concessive clause beginning with 'Although coaching Centre is cost-effective...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text. Notable errors include 'I and my team' (should be 'My team and I'), missing articles ('the online demo class', 'on saturday evening'), and a comma splice in the final paragraph ('...children who never spoken that language, furthermore, we will...'). Despite these recurring errors, the meaning remains mostly clear to the reader.
