Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr Smith,

I am writing to express my interest for the advert you published in the New times paper regarding the language turtoring for your children.

My name is Joe i come from france, currently living in your neighbhour at Melborne. I am purusing my Masters in Theology at Thames university and was looking for a part time job. And at same time i came across this Ad and i thought it would be a good match for me. Before coming to Australia i was a french teacher back at my home country helping new immigrants adapt to the language and culture. French is a widely spoken language in western europe and north parts of america and has deep significance down the history. It would be great in knowing this language when travelling around the world.

Additionaly, i saw you got a large front and back yard. i can help you in maintaining the garden which can earn me some more money that can ease my financial pressure. Please, look through my request and looking to hear back from you soon.

Your sincere

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the task instructions. You clearly explain why you are suitable for the job by mentioning your previous experience teaching French to new immigrants. You also state what else you could do by offering to help maintain the large front and back yard. Furthermore, you provide reasons for wanting the job, noting your current status as a theology student looking for a part-time job and a way to ease financial pressure. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter, and all three required prompts are fully addressed. Your ideas are relevant and well-developed, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0 in this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a clear, logical organisation with an appropriate opening and closing, although the sign-off 'Your sincere' contains a grammatical slip. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the introduction, background experience, additional offer, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are generally well managed, with phrases like 'Before coming to Australia' and 'Additionaly' helping to guide the reader through the text. However, some referencing is slightly disjointed, and punctuation around paragraph breaks could be polished. Overall, the text flows reasonably well, supporting a Band 6.5 score for coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'express my interest', 'significant', and 'maintaining'. However, there are several spelling and word-choice errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'turtoring' instead of tutoring, 'neighbhour' instead of neighbour, and 'Melborne' instead of Melbourne. There are also capitalization errors like 'france' and 'french'. Despite these flaws, communication is never impeded, and you make appropriate attempts at less common vocabulary such as 'financial pressure'. This performance aligns well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses and compound sentences ('Before coming to Australia I was a french teacher back at my home country helping new immigrants...'). There are, however, several grammatical inaccuracies and punctuation errors, including missing articles ('in the New times paper'), incorrect prepositions ('interest for the advert' instead of 'in'), and run-on sentences ('My name is Joe i come from france...'). Punctuation at the beginning of sentences and missing capitalisation are noticeable throughout. Because these errors do not impede overall communication, the writing achieves a Band 6.0 for grammatical range and accuracy.
