Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Adam,

I hope you are doing great. I am writing to let you know that recently I saw an advertisement in need of a language tutor for your children.

I am happy to share that I have been an expert in teaching French for the last five years.

I have done my Master's in Fremch language and had been running a language centre for children of all ages. It has been successfully aimed for the language development of children. I believe children are a quick learner and learning language is skill that can be nurtured at an early age. These all things make me a perfect candidate for the job.

Moreover, in addition to practise conversation on daily basis, I also arrange calligraphy workshops for the children. This facility is available both online and on campus.

I am in need of this job as this experience will add worth to my resume'. Additionally, I have been focusing on my own childfren to learn French, since children learn more easily by interacting with one another.

I look forward for your response.

Kind regards,

Arzoo

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions well. You have explained your suitability by highlighting your five years of teaching experience and Master's degree in French, stated what else you can do by offering calligraphy workshops and daily conversation practice, and given your reasons for wanting the job (adding worth to your resume and helping your own children learn French). The tone is appropriately polite for a letter to an advertiser. The ideas are adequately developed, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.0 to 6.5. To achieve a higher band, some points, such as the benefits of your teaching methodology, could be extended further with more specific details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with standard letter formatting, beginning with an appropriate salutation ("Dear Mrs Adam,") and sign-off. Paragraphing is used to separate different points, such as your background, additional services, and reasons for applying. Cohesive devices like "Moreover", "Additionally", and "Since" are employed to link ideas, although referencing and transitions can occasionally feel slightly mechanical or abrupt, such as the transition into "These all things make me a perfect candidate". Progression is clear throughout, aligning well with the descriptors for a Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying your meaning with terms like "advertisement", "language development", and "calligraphy workshops". However, there are notable spelling errors and awkward word choices, such as spelling "French" as "Fremch", writing "practise conversation on daily basis" instead of "practice conversation on a daily basis", and using "add worth to my resume'". These errors represent attempts at less common lexical items but limit the score to a Band 6.0, as they indicate some insecurity with collocation and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures successfully (e.g., "since children learn more easily by interacting with one another"). However, there are noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as "in need of an advertisement" (instead of responding to an advertisement), "had been running" (where simple past might be more natural), "children are a quick learner" (plurality mismatch), and "These all things" (which should be "All of these things"). Punctuation is generally fine, but the grammatical slips place this performance firmly at Band 6.0.
