Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Mam,

i just read your advertisement in newspaper that you are looking for a teacher who can teach punjabi language to your kids for one year.

I think i am perfect for this job as i have good teaching skills and even punjabi is my favourite subject and my mother tongue as well. I do have a teaching experience from backhome as i was teacher in government school in my country. I have good skills to make study interesting by adding some good activities into that for example- some fun discussion according to their interests and organize a debate competition and other activities too, which makes things easier and interesting for them. I also love to spend time with kids and be their full time care taker and guide them to be a good person. I need this job as i am new to this country and place. So, that would be really appreciated if i can get this job and earn some to fulfill my daily needs.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response covers all three bullet points required by the task. The writer explains why they are suitable by mentioning teaching experience in a government school, good teaching skills, and Punjabi being their mother tongue. They mention what else they could do by offering to be a full-time caretaker and guide the children. Finally, they provide reasons for wanting the job, stating they are new to the country and need to earn money to fulfill daily needs. However, the salutation is slightly flawed ('Dear Sir or Mam' instead of addressing the couple directly as requested in the prompt). Ideas are relevant and clear, though some points like taking care of the kids could be slightly better integrated into a more cohesive narrative. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, placing it at a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a coherent overall arrangement, and the progression of ideas is generally clear as it moves from the purpose of the letter to qualifications and reasons for applying. However, paragraphing is weak; the entire body of the letter is compressed into a single, overly long block of text. Cohesive devices are used, but they are sometimes repetitive or basic, such as starting multiple sentences with 'I' or 'And'. Referencing is mostly clear, but the lack of paragraph breaks hampers the overall logical structure. These features align with Band 5.5 to 6.0, and given the attempts at logical organisation despite the single-paragraph flaw, a Band 6.0 is appropriate.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task. The student demonstrates some less common phrases, such as 'government school', 'debate competition', and 'full time care taker', which convey the intended meaning successfully. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors, such as 'Mam' instead of 'Madam', 'backhome' written as one word, and awkward phrasings like 'earn some to fulfill my daily needs' (missing an object after 'earn'). While these minor errors exist, communication is not impeded, and the range is sufficient to place the response at a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures like 'which makes things easier and interesting for them'. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues, including lowercase 'i' used as a personal pronoun, a comma splice ('I need this job as i am new to this country and place. So, that would be really appreciated...'), and missing articles. Despite these recurring grammatical and punctuation inaccuracies, the structures used do not impede overall communication. This mix of error frequency and structural variety corresponds to a Band 5.5 or 6.0, fitting firmly into Band 6.0.
