Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the main parts of the task, such as explaining why the writer is suitable by mentioning their teaching experience at Kings College, stating availability, and offering extra help on a complimentary basis. However, the coverage is limited and the ideas remain quite basic and under-developed. For example, the point about what else the writer could do for the family is vague and lacks elaboration beyond a general offer to help out. Similarly, the reasons for wanting the job are only partially expressed through a desire to teach the children. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to expand on each bullet point with fully developed, detailed explanations and a clearer personal perspective.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some basic organisation in the letter, with an attempt to group ideas into paragraphs, such as introducing the purpose of the message in the opening and discussing availability and additional help in subsequent sections. However, there is no clear overall progression of ideas, and the logical flow between sentences is occasionally hindered by abrupt transitions. Cohesive devices are minimal, repetitive, and sometimes inaccurate, such as the frequent reliance on 'and' to join clauses rather than using a variety of cohesive links. Paragraphing is also erratic and not fully appropriate throughout the text. To improve, the writer should ensure a smoother progression of ideas and use a wider, more accurate range of cohesive devices to connect sentences and paragraphs logically.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common terms related to teaching and availability, but these are frequently marred by noticeable spelling errors, such as 'meassage', 'wll', 'childern', 'languege', 'avaible', 'convienent', 'accomodate', 'profressionaly', 'ahve', 'resposne', and 'convienece'. Word choice and word formation are also inconsistent. These spelling and lexical errors are frequent enough to cause some difficulty for the reader and impede smooth communication. To achieve a higher band, the writer must demonstrate a broader lexical range with significantly greater accuracy in spelling, word choice, and word formation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The writer uses a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences joined by coordinating conjunctions. When complex structures or multi-clause sentences are attempted, they are often faulty, featuring punctuation errors and run-on sentences, such as 'i just want to let you know i am teacher at kings college and teach the student of different languege...' There are frequent errors in verb forms, articles, and agreement throughout the text, including missing capitalization, incorrect capitalization of pronouns, and awkward phrasing. These errors are frequent and can cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over basic grammatical structures, use punctuation more accurately, and incorporate error-free complex sentences.
