Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am writing to you on behalf of the advertisement I just came across with. I am a native Urdu speaker from Pakistan. I recently moved to Australia for my masters and I am willing to take this opportunity to teach your kid Urdu. I will help him/her learn alphabets, do correct pronunciation. In addition to that I will assist him learning meanings, constructing sentences and fluently speak the language. Moreover, I am mostly available during daytime and as well as throughout the week, making it more easier to accomodate the classes.

Furthermore, as per my availability I can certainly help you with home chores, also I can assist the kid with studies as well.

As being said, my availability makes me flexible and I have no running commitments therefore I can provide the kid proper attention and time.

Looking forward to hearing from you and securing the job, hopefully.

Yours Sincerely,

Ella John

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully covering why the writer is suitable for the job, what else can be done for the family, and the reasons for wanting the position. However, some aspects are more fully developed than others. For instance, the explanation of suitability focuses primarily on language teaching basics like alphabets and pronunciation, but lacks further extension. Similarly, the points regarding home chores and studying assistance are mentioned briefly without detailed elaboration. The tone is appropriate for a letter, beginning with an incorrect salutation ('Dear Sir/ Madam,' instead of addressing the couple as requested), but the overall purpose of the communication is clearly conveyed and relevant throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical sequence of ideas, moving from the job application to additional help and personal motivation. However, the progression is sometimes hindered by mechanical or repetitive cohesive devices. For example, the excessive use of transition words like 'In addition to that', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' creates a slightly formulaic structure rather than smooth flow. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun reference in 'as per my availability I can certainly help you with home chores', and the paragraphing is underdeveloped, as the response is clustered into a single block of text rather than distinct paragraphs for each prompt requirement.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

An adequate range of vocabulary is used to communicate the message effectively. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary and idiomatic phrases, such as 'running commitments' and 'accommodate the classes', though there are minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For instance, phrases like 'come across with' contain prepositional errors, and 'making it more easier' includes a double comparative. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede overall communication, allowing the reader to easily understand the intended meaning of the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use relative clauses and participial phrases, such as 'making it more easier to accomodate the classes'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('learn alphabets' instead of 'learn the alphabet'), prepositions ('assist him learning'), and awkward phrasing like 'As being said'. Despite these persistent errors, the sentence structures remain comprehensible, and the grammatical mistakes rarely impede communication, placing the response firmly within the expected parameters for this level.
