Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sumitra,

I am writing this in response to the advertisment for someone to tutor your two children my native language for a period of twelve months. I believe that I would be a great fit for this role as I am well-versed in Gujarati and I love spending time with kids. Apart from that, I am patient, friendly and responsible, and I can explain new words in a simple and enjoyable way. Moreover, I will make use of stories and pictures to understand the language swiftly.

Along with this, I can help the family with prepaing meals and performing basic chores. Also, making your kids familiar with Indian tradition and culture will be also a great opportunity for me.

I would like this job because I am willing to experience Australian family life while learning the local culture. I would love to teach my language and culture to your childrens.

I look forward to a positive responnse.

Yours faithfully,

Devanshi Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You successfully address all parts of the prompt, satisfying the requirement to cover the advertisement, explain your suitability, suggest additional help, and give your reasons for wanting the job. For instance, you explain that you are well-versed in Gujarati and patient, state that you can help with preparing meals and chores, and express your desire to experience Australian family life. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. While your suitability and reasons are detailed, the bullet point regarding what else you could do is somewhat brief and touches lightly on cultural exchange without full extension. This balance of covering all areas with some minor under-development places your task response right in the middle range.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You adopt an appropriate semi-formal letter format, starting with a correct greeting and sign-off, and you structure your ideas into coherent paragraphs. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: introduction and suitability in the first, additional help and culture in the second, and personal motivation in the third. You use cohesive devices adequately, such as 'Apart from that', 'Moreover', and 'Along with this', ensuring that relationships between ideas are clear. Referencing is generally well managed, contributing to an overall arrangement that is easy to follow, supporting a solid performance in this criterion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive phrases such as 'well-versed', 'basic chores', and 'cultural exchange'. There are, however, some lexical and spelling errors that prevent a higher grade. For instance, you misspelt 'advertisment' as 'advertisment', wrote 'prepaing' instead of 'preparing', and used the non-standard plural 'childrens' instead of 'children'. Despite these slips, your word choices are generally clear and do not impede communication, effectively showing a sufficient working vocabulary for a general letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You display a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating structures such as 'I believe that I would be a great fit' and 'I would like this job because I am willing to...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as the awkward phrasing 'to understand the language swiftly' (where a prepositional phrase like 'to help them understand' would be clearer) and a minor punctuation slip in the closing 'positive responnse' (spelling). Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, with many sentences remaining grammatically sound and well-controlled throughout.
