Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

My name is Simran. I have seen your advertisement that you are looking for a teacher to teach your children a new language.

I believe that I could be a great fit for this job because I have an experience in teaching younger kids, as I work as a tutor for primary school student, and I am doing it from past 3 years. The another reason is that I am fluent in English, so there would not be a language barrier between myself and kids.

Other than this, I can teach children about organizational skills and diverse culture. I am also a great cook. Therefore, I can cook really delicious food and also can teach you to cook various Indian cuisines.

I am extremely interested in this job because teaching children a new language and other skills is my favourite hobby. Moreover, visiting Australia was always in my bucket list.

I would really aprreciate if you can provide me with opportunity.

Yours faithfully,

Manpreet.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You successfully address all parts of the task prompt, covering why you are suitable for the job, what else you can do for the family, and your reasons for wanting the position. Your ideas are relevant and generally clear, showing signs of higher-level development when you mention tutoring primary school students and teaching organizational skills or Indian cuisines. However, some sections remain slightly under-developed or brief, such as your explanation of why teaching is your favourite hobby or your passing reference to wanting to visit Australia. To reach the next level, you need to fully extend and support all your ideas with richer elaboration and detail throughout every section of the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. You structure the response well by dedicating distinct paragraphs to each part of the prompt, ensuring the overall arrangement is entirely coherent. You make effective use of cohesive devices to guide the reader smoothly from point to point, such as 'The another reason is that', 'Other than this', and 'Therefore'. Paragraphing is used appropriately and sufficiently to separate your introduction, body points covering suitability and additional help, your motivations, and your concluding remarks. To achieve an even higher score, you could employ referencing and cohesive ties with greater flexibility and subtlety.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You display an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your message with relevant terms such as 'advertisement', 'fluent', 'organizational skills', and 'diverse culture'. You attempt some less common vocabulary, though this is occasionally accompanied by word choice and phrasing inaccuracies, such as 'I have an experience' instead of 'experience', and 'from past 3 years' instead of 'for the past 3 years'. Furthermore, there is a minor contradiction in the name used at the beginning versus the end of the letter ('Simran' and 'Manpreet'), which points to minor slips. To move higher, you should expand your control of less common lexical items and ensure greater precision in collocation and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms effectively, demonstrating control over structures such as 'I believe that I could be a great fit' and 'because I have an experience in teaching'. There are some grammatical errors present, particularly with articles, prepositions, and verb tenses, such as 'primary school student' instead of 'students', 'The another reason' instead of 'Another reason', and 'if you can provide me with opportunity' missing the article 'an'. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing your meaning to remain clear throughout the letter. To reach a higher band, you would need to produce a greater frequency of error-free sentences using a wider variety of complex grammatical structures.
