Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Mr./Mrs.

I'm Manpreet Kaur. I have just seen your advertisement that you are looking for a language tutor for your children. I want to say that I can teach your children, as I think I' m suitable for this job because I have 4 years of experience in this job and I have done a B.ed which shows my academic knowledge, so I feel this is the right job for me.

I also want to include that, apart from teaching children, I will be proven helpful for your family too. As I'm very active in housekeeping, I think this duty could be beneficial for you

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response only partially addresses the task and fails to meet the minimum word length requirement, falling significantly short of the 150-word target. While the writer touches upon why they are suitable by mentioning teaching experience and a B.Ed degree, and briefly notes what else they could do for the family through housekeeping, the third bullet point regarding reasons for wanting the job is largely omitted. Ideas are severely limited and under-developed, lacking the necessary detail and extension expected. To improve, the writer must ensure all bullet points from the prompt are fully covered and expand the text well beyond the minimum word count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement and attempts to organise ideas into paragraphs, addressing different parts of the prompt in sequence. However, cohesion is basic and mechanical. The letter begins abruptly with 'Dear Mr./Mrs.' rather than addressing the specific couple in the prompt, and the transition between ideas relies on simple connectors like 'and' and 'As'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and paragraphing is underdeveloped due to the brevity of the response. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to use a wider range of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure a clearer overall progression of ideas with well-structured paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, conveying basic meaning with words such as 'advertisement', 'tutor', 'experience', and 'academic knowledge'. The writer makes some attempts to use less common vocabulary, but this leads to unnatural phrasing and collocation errors, such as 'proven helpful' instead of 'prove helpful' and repeating 'in this job' closely together. Spelling is generally accurate, but the limited range and occasional word-choice inaccuracies restrict the score. To improve, the writer should incorporate a broader range of precise, topic-specific vocabulary and more natural collocations suitable for a formal letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, such as the subordinate clauses introduced by 'as' and 'which'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including the incomplete opening salutation and awkward phrasing like 'I want to say that I can teach your children, as I think I' m suitable'. However, these errors rarely impede communication, and basic structures are generally controlled well. To reach a higher band, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of complex structures with greater accuracy and ensure flawless punctuation throughout the letter.
