Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear John,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to give you some information on the language teacher requirement of yours. I recently scrolled through your advertisement post on social media and found out that you want to teach your children Hindi language. I am a Hindi language teacher here in India at the government school. I have three years of experience in teaching field. Moreover, I have also been awarded as Gold Medalist in this field. Considering these facts, I believe your kids will be learning from the best teacher.
Additionally, I will also arrange one family session each month to review your children's progress as well as their speaking skills. In fact, there will be no charges for extra coaching time if the pupils have any doubts.
Finally, I want to inform you the urgent need for this job. I have taken volunteer leave from school for a year to help my wife taking care of my new born baby. During this time, I want to generate some side income and want to spend some time doing what I love to do. I hope we will be talking soon.
Best Regards,
Nicola Tokla.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, fulfilling the requirements for a General Training letter. You cover why you are suitable by highlighting your professional background, stating 'I am a Hindi language teacher here in India at the government school.' You also mention what else you could do by offering family progress sessions and extra coaching without charges. Furthermore, your reasons for wanting the job are clearly communicated regarding your volunteer leave and desire for side income. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; for instance, the explanation of your reasons leans slightly brief and could be extended further to fully reach a higher tier. Overall, all bullet points are relevantly addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter maintains a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You establish an appropriate opening and closing, and use paragraphing effectively to separate your main points, such as separating your teaching suitability from your additional offerings and personal motivations. Cohesive devices are used adequately with expressions like 'Additionally' and 'Finally', creating a coherent overall arrangement. Referencing is generally clear, though certain cohesive transitions feel slightly mechanical rather than entirely natural or flexible, which places this aspect firmly in the solid middle tier of organisation.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating a sufficient range to communicate your ideas clearly. You successfully attempt some less common items and subject-specific phrases, such as 'Gold Medalist' and 'side income'. However, there are some word-choice and collocation inaccuracies that prevent a higher score, such as 'language teacher requirement of yours' instead of 'language teaching requirements', 'advertisement post' instead of simply 'advertisement', and 'teaching field' instead of 'the teaching profession'. Fortunately, these minor lexical slips do not impede overall communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You demonstrate a reasonable mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses effectively as seen in 'Considering these facts, I believe your kids will be learning from the best teacher.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, such as missing articles ('at government school' instead of 'at a government school') and preposition or phrasing awkwardness like 'help my wife taking care' instead of 'help my wife take care'. Despite these occasional errors in grammar, they rarely impede communication, and your sentence structures remain generally understandable and controlled.
