Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. & Mrs.Stevenson,
I hope this letter finds you in good health. I am writing this letter to express my interest towards the advertisement you guys posted on social media for a teacher to teach French language to your children.
I have teached French as a second language for the past 10 years with many of my students excelling to native level of fluency. By considering me i will be able to pass on my knowledge and passion for French literature to your children. I am also a great chef who loves to cook, so cooking for the family won't be a problem anymore.
I have teached French lanuage in different countries around the globe, experiencing and adopting different cultures around the globe. Australia is still on my bucketlist which i would love to tick off by working for your family.
I hope to hear from your family soon.
Thankyou for considering my request,
Regards,
Thomson.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt, earning a solid score. You have explained your suitability by mentioning your ten years of teaching experience, stated what else you could do by offering to cook for the family, and given reasons for wanting the job, such as experiencing Australian culture. While all bullet points are addressed, some ideas remain a little under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, mentioning that you are a great chef is stated quite briefly without elaborating on what kind of meals you can prepare or how it would specifically help a busy family. To reach higher bands, you should expand on each point with more specific details and examples, ensuring a more fully rounded exploration of every aspect of the task prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your letter shows a clear overall progression and logical arrangement of ideas, moving smoothly from the greeting and purpose of the letter to your qualifications, additional skills, personal motivations, and finally a polite sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct thoughts, such as separating your teaching experience and culinary offer from your personal reasons for wanting to move to Australia. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or repetitive, relying on phrases like 'around the globe' closely together in the text. Referencing is generally clear, but smoother transitional phrases would enhance the flow between sentences. To push into higher bands, integrate a wider and more natural variety of cohesive devices to connect your ideas more seamlessly without making the structure feel formulaic.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your message with appropriate terms related to teaching and professions. You attempt some less common vocabulary such as 'fluency', 'bucketlist', and 'passion'. However, there are notable lexical resource issues, including collocation and word choice errors like 'teached' instead of 'taught', and minor spelling or phrasing slips such as 'lanuage' and the informal greeting 'you guys', which is slightly too casual for a professional employment inquiry. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. To improve, focus on mastering irregular past tense forms, standard professional salutations, and expanding your range of more sophisticated, precise vocabulary suited for formal correspondence.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I am writing this letter to express my interest...' and 'Australia is still on my bucketlist which i would love to tick off...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing capitalisation on the pronoun 'i' and minor punctuation slips around names and clauses, but these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. You manage basic verb tenses reasonably well, although the irregular past participle error 'teached' falls under vocabulary/morphology. To achieve a higher band, incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures with a higher frequency of error-free sentences, and pay closer attention to capitalization and punctuation rules throughout your writing.
