Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Kaur,

I am writing this letter to enquire about the advertisement regarding your requirement for a language teacher for your children.

Firstly, I should take into account the importance of your need and I wanted to apply for this postition as of I have relevant experience in teaching languages, and its my passion too.

Moreover, this job is in Australia,so, as of an immigrant i can also help in household chores for the family, which provides me better interferance with the family, this could help me to teach children productively by creating family bonds with them.

lastly, I prefferd this job because I already wanted to move to Australia on a work permit and finding a job related to my teaching experience, also having poor fincial conditions to survive.I hope you will understand my situation and i would wait for your response.

Yours Sincerly,

Sukhvinder Singh

Coherence and Cohesion5.5
Lexical Resource5.0
Grammatical Range and Accuracy5.0
Overall5.0

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the main parts of the task by explaining suitability, offering extra help, and stating reasons for wanting the job, though the ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed. For instance, mentioning the financial situation is a relevant reason, but it lacks elaboration. Additionally, the response falls slightly short of the minimum length requirement of 150 words, coming in at 147 words. To reach a higher band, all bullet points need to be fully developed with extended explanations and richer details, while comfortably exceeding the word count threshold.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some basic organisation with paragraph breaks and introductory and concluding salutations, but the overall progression lacks smooth transitions. Cohesive devices are sometimes used mechanically, such as starting multiple sentences with transitional markers like 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'lastly', which can feel repetitive. Referencing between ideas is not always clear, and the flow between sentences stumbles slightly due to punctuation issues. To improve in this criterion, you should use a wider variety of cohesive ties more naturally and ensure logical progression from one point to the next without over-relying on standard transitional adverbs.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for fulfilling the task. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'postition' (spelling error), 'better interferance', 'prefferd', and 'fincial conditions'. These errors can cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the text from achieving a higher score. To reach the next band, you should expand your vocabulary range, incorporate less common lexical items accurately with attention to collocation, and carefully check your spelling and word forms before finishing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The text displays a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple or awkwardly joined complex sentences. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('as of an immigrant', 'having poor fincial conditions'), incorrect preposition use ('as of I have'), and run-on sentences lacking proper punctuation. These errors often cause strain and difficulty for the reader. To improve, you need to demonstrate greater control over complex sentence patterns, ensure correct subject-verb agreement, and polish your punctuation to minimise grammatical errors throughout the letter.
