Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Madam/Sir,

I am writing to apply as a 'Punjabi' language tutor for your children. I have well qualified degrees such as bachelors and masters in Punjabi language which makes me suitable for this job.

Adding to this, I can also teach them other subjects such as maths, science and civics. I can provide home tutoring as per your requirements, so that you do not have to worry about picking up or dropping off. Moreover, I have flexible schedule and can work morning or evenings as per your needs.

I was a language teacher for primary and secondary back in my home country. As, I have recently moved to Australia I would like to join the same profession. On top of this, it would be helpful experience for my career in Australia as I can et a job at school.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Sukhman Sekhon

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You successfully cover all the requirements of the prompt by explaining your suitability, stating extra services you can provide, and giving reasons for wanting the job. Your tone is appropriate for a formal letter to potential employers. While all three bullet points are addressed, some ideas show a tendency toward under-development, such as your reasons for wanting the job where you mention gaining helpful experience for an Australian school career without fully expanding on how this benefits the family. To move towards a higher band, you should ensure that every main point is fully extended with more specific details or examples, allowing all parts of the task to be addressed with equal depth and clarity.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression of ideas. You appropriately use paragraphing to separate different topics, starting with an introduction and suitability, moving to additional help and scheduling in the second paragraph, and covering your reasons and future goals in the third paragraph. However, your use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as the transition 'Adding to this,' and the abrupt sentence structure starting with 'As, I have recently moved...'. To achieve a higher band, you need to employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and referencing phrases to connect your sentences and paragraphs more fluidly without attracting attention.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items related to employment and teaching, such as 'primary and secondary', 'flexible schedule', and 'home tutoring'. However, there are some word choice and word formation inaccuracies that prevent you from reaching a higher band. For instance, writing 'apply as' rather than 'apply for', and the phrasing 'well qualified degrees such as bachelors and masters' contains minor lexical awkwardness. Additionally, there is a spelling typo in 'as I can et a job'. To improve your lexical score, focus on refining word choices, ensuring correct prepositions are paired with verbs and nouns, and polishing spelling to communicate your ideas with greater precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic structures and incorporating multi-clause sentences like 'I can provide home tutoring as per your requirements, so that you do not have to worry about picking up or dropping off.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('a bachelors and masters') and an incorrect comma placement in 'As, I have recently moved'. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and do not obscure your meaning. To reach the next band level, you should aim to produce a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and refine your punctuation, particularly regarding comma usage after introductory dependent clauses.
