Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to express my interest in teaching Spanish to your young ones. I have great knowledge about this language. I am confident that I can teach it very well as I used to give tuition classes to students in this language back in my home country and it is my mother tongue.

I would like to help you with other household chores like making meals for children and playing various games that may help to make learning more interested.

I moved to Australia just couple weeks ago and looking for job to help me in surviving my life in this new country.

I will look forward to share my experience with you and promise that I will not disappoint you. I will try to give my full dedication towards teaching your kids. I am going to attach my resume to this email.

Thank you in advance for considering my application.

Yours faithfully,

Prabhjot Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task satisfactorily, addressing suitability, additional help, and reasons for wanting the job. You successfully explain why you are suitable by mentioning that Spanish is your mother tongue and that you have prior tuition experience. You also mention what else you can do, such as helping with household chores and preparing meals. Your reason for wanting the job is also clearly stated, as you mention that you recently moved to Australia and are looking for work. However, some ideas are a bit brief and could be extended further. To reach a higher level, you should fully develop each bullet point with more elaborate explanations and examples rather than keeping the points relatively short and direct.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure from the opening greeting down to the sign-off. You group related ideas into paragraphs, making the letter easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of simple connectors and transition patterns. Referencing and linking sentences could be smoother to create better progression throughout the response. To improve further, incorporate a wider variety of cohesive phrases and ensure that ideas flow naturally from one sentence to the next without relying on basic transitional links.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your message about teaching Spanish and offering help around the house. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary items, such as expressing interest and mentioning duties, but these are accompanied by some word-choice and collocation inaccuracies, for example saying 'learning more interested' instead of 'interesting' or 'surviving my life' instead of 'settling in'. These minor lexical errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving greater precision. To reach a higher standard, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and precise word forms appropriate for formal letter writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic sentence structures. You manage to include various tenses and subordinate clauses, such as 'I am writing to express my interest' and 'as I used to give tuition classes'. However, there are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles and preposition issues, such as 'looking for job' instead of 'looking for a job' and 'look forward to share' instead of 'sharing'. These errors rarely impede communication and your meaning remains clear throughout. To move up, you should aim for greater accuracy in complex sentence patterns and ensure careful proofreading of grammatical structures.
