Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mrs Ali,

I am writing to let you know that I have seen your advertisement, and I am willing to teach your children Urdu language for a year.

Let me tell you about myself. I belong to Pakistan where the national language in Urdu, so I have considerable fluency in it. Moreover, my qualification is Masters in Urdu literature which makes me a suitable candidate for this job.

In addition to enhancing Urdu spoken skills of your children, I can offer to give them extra classes to teach them how to read Urdu. I have a collection of Urdu storybooks, which will help them to learn Urdu faster.

I am applying for this job, as I need to save money to give my next year's University fee. Furthermore, teaching has always been my passion, and this would be a wonderful opportunity to fulfill my lifelong dream of becoming a teacher. I am hoping to hear a positive response from you.

Thank you for your consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Sara

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three requested points and maintain a clear, appropriate purpose throughout. Your Urdu background and master’s qualification explain why you are suitable, while the offer to teach reading and use your storybooks adds a useful contribution for the family. You also give two distinct reasons for applying: saving for university fees and pursuing your ambition to teach. These ideas are relevant and supported, which fits the descriptor for a response that covers the task and extends its points. To strengthen the letter further, make the family-focused offer more specific—for example, mention how you might practise Urdu with the children in everyday activities—and clarify your availability or teaching approach. This would develop the proposal more fully rather than relying mainly on general claims.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter is easy to follow, with a clear progression from your application and qualifications to what you can offer, then your reasons for wanting the position. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking phrases such as “Moreover,” “In addition to,” and “Furthermore” help connect related points. The opening and closing also make the response recognisably a formal letter. This is a strong, logical organisation with flexible use of cohesive devices. To make the flow even more natural, reduce the slightly formulaic sequence of transitions and connect some ideas more directly. For instance, the storybooks could be linked explicitly to your plan for teaching reading, while the final paragraph could move more smoothly from your financial reason to your enthusiasm for teaching.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal application, including “considerable fluency,” “suitable candidate,” “enhancing,” and “lifelong dream.” These choices communicate your qualifications and motivation clearly, and there is some attempt to use less common language. However, a few expressions are not fully natural or precise: “Urdu spoken skills” is awkward, and “give my next year's University fee” is an imprecise collocation. “Learn Urdu faster” is understandable but rather general. These occasional word-choice and collocation issues keep the vocabulary from being consistently flexible and precise. Aim to use natural combinations such as “spoken Urdu skills,” “cover my university tuition fees,” and “make faster progress in Urdu.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which will help them” and a purpose clause in “to teach them how to read Urdu.” Several sentences are accurate and easy to understand, and punctuation is generally controlled. A few grammatical errors remain, however. In “the national language in Urdu,” the verb should be “is”; “my qualification is Masters” needs a more complete construction, such as “I have a master’s degree”; and “next year's University fee” would be clearer as “next year’s university fees.” The sentence beginning “I am applying for this job, as…” is understandable, though the comma is unnecessary before the reason clause. More consistent control of these details, alongside varied sentence patterns, would strengthen accuracy.
