Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mike and Ivy,

I am writing to express my willingness to help your children learn english as their second language. I have seen your advertisement and you all live to australia.

I would like to ask you if we can arrange an online meeting, as I am living in a different country from yours. I am a graduate with a degree in teaching english in secondary education. Additionally I recently got my certificate in English as Secondary Language. This is to inform you that I am the suitable teacher to help your children learn the language.

I recently resigned from my part-time job, which is cooking. Therefore, I can teach your children to cook by themselves, so we can add this to a package.

I will be happy to receive a response from you, as I am in need of money to support my mother that is in the hospital for her dialysis.

Thank you so much and have a great day!

Kind regards,

Angelo Sta. Ana

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you explain your teaching qualifications, offer cooking lessons as an extra contribution, and give a personal reason for wanting the position. The degree and certificate provide relevant evidence of suitability, while your mother’s medical needs make your motivation clear. However, some details are less fully developed or unclear. In particular, the opening says you can help the children learn English, although the task asks you to teach your own language; this creates uncertainty about what language you would teach. The cooking offer is relevant but could be explained more specifically, and the request for an online meeting could be linked more clearly to arranging the role. Clarifying these points would make the letter more complete and convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you introduce your interest, present your qualifications, add what else you can offer, and explain your motivation before closing politely. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these separate points, and connectors such as “Additionally” and “Therefore” show relationships between ideas. Some links are less smooth or precise, however. The opening moves from your willingness to teach to the statement about the couple living in Australia without a clear connection, and “This is to inform you” sounds formulaic rather than naturally linking your qualifications to your suitability. The online-meeting request also interrupts the qualifications paragraph slightly. Use more direct transitions and make each paragraph’s purpose clear to strengthen progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main points, including relevant terms such as “degree,” “certificate,” “part-time job,” and “dialysis.” There are also attempts at more formal expressions, such as “express my willingness” and “arrange an online meeting.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “you all live to australia” does not express the intended meaning, and “English as Secondary Language” is not the usual name for the qualification. “My part-time job, which is cooking” is also an awkward way to describe your work. Check conventional phrases and capitalisation of language and place names, and choose wording that sounds natural in a formal letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the reason clause in “as I am living in a different country from yours” and the relative clause in “which is cooking.” Most of the message remains understandable, and errors do not generally prevent the reader from following your meaning. Some grammatical and punctuation issues remain. For example, “I am a graduate with a degree…” needs cleaner sentence punctuation and spacing, while “I recently got my certificate” would fit the formal context better with a more carefully constructed phrase. The opening also combines ideas in a way that makes the relationship between them unclear. Review sentence boundaries, articles, and clause construction, while retaining the variety of structures you already attempt.
