Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Mr. Sharma,

I am writing to insist you to send your children to our language learing centre. Actually, Yesterday I was scrolling through social media and came across your post on instagram that your looking for a tutor for your both children for Punjabi language as your children canadian born.

I Thought our centre would be best option for you as I am running this tution centre for 5 years and I have valid teaching licence along with 10+ year teaching experience. The best thing is that I am native Punjabi speaker and very well know all slang as well. Moreover, my mother in law is also running daycare just beside my centre so it would be convient for you as I can pick-up your children directly from day to save your precious time.

If you take our both services together then we will offer you 25% discount for first 2 months bracuse special offer going on due to christmas season. I totally understand your concern that it is hard for you to decide, however I will teach your children meticulously.

Thank so much for your time. I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convience.

Manroop.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The letter responds to the advertisement and gives relevant reasons for offering language lessons, including your Punjabi-speaking background and teaching experience. It also proposes childcare and a discount, so there is some useful information for the family. However, the response only minimally fulfils the task because it changes the central purpose: the couple wants someone to teach their children for a year, but you repeatedly promote a language centre and ask them to send the children there. The reasons you personally want the job are also not explained; the discount is a sales offer, not your motivation. Address the couple directly as a prospective tutor, explain why you want to work with their family, and develop how you would teach their children at home or in the arrangement they advertised.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The ideas are grouped into paragraphs, and the sequence—from responding to the advertisement, to describing your experience and extra services, to closing—is generally understandable. Connectors such as “Moreover,” “however,” and “If” help show relationships between points. However, the progression is weakened by the shift between applying as an individual tutor and promoting a centre, which makes the purpose of the letter unclear. Some links are also mechanical or imprecise: “If you take our both services together” does not clearly connect to the earlier offer, and “I totally understand your concern” introduces a concern the couple has not mentioned. Keep the letter focused on the advertised role and use clear transitions to link your suitability, additional help, and personal motivation.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary for the situation, including “native Punjabi speaker,” “teaching experience,” “daycare,” and “discount,” and the reader can generally understand your proposals. There are also attempts at more specific wording, such as “meticulously” and “precious time.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make the message less natural: “learing,” “tution,” “convient,” “bracuse,” and “convience” should be corrected. Several phrases are awkward or unsuitable for a personal application, particularly “insist you to send” and “all slang.” Choose precise, natural expressions such as “offer to teach,” “Punjabi expressions,” and “convenient,” and use vocabulary that presents you as a prospective family tutor rather than advertising a centre.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The letter includes both short statements and attempts at longer sentences, for example the sentence beginning “I thought our centre would be best option” and the conditional offer beginning “If you take…”. However, the longer structures are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences awkward to follow. Examples include “I am writing to insist you to send,” “your looking for a tutor,” and “I can pick-up your children directly from day,” where verb patterns, contractions, and sentence construction need attention. Articles and possessives are also inconsistent, as in “best option” and “your both children.” Practise accurate patterns such as “I am writing to offer to teach your children” and “I can pick them up from daycare,” then proofread punctuation and sentence boundaries.
