Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to apply for the position adversited for someone to teach Gujarati to your two children for one year.

I believe that I will be most suitable for this role because my first language, and I can speak, read and write it fluently. I have also done my education from english medium school, so I can help your children learning words and grammar from gujarati to english for their understanding of the language. Furthemore, I am patient, responsible and comfortable in working with children. I would make the lessons enjoyable by using stories, games and simple conversations rather than relying on the traditional textbooks.

In addition to teaching Gujarati, I could help your children with their schoolwork, particularly mathematics and computer studies. I would also be happy to organise educational activities and introduce them to Indian traditions, festivals and food. If required, I could occasionally supervise the children when you are busy.

I am interested in this position because it would allow me to gain valuable teaching experience while sharing my language and culture. I would also enjoy experiencing life in Australia and learning more about Australian society.

I would be pleased to provide further information or attend an online interview at your convenience. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Dhruvil Desais

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three requested points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose: you apply to teach Gujarati, describe additional help you could offer, and explain your motivation. The suitability section is particularly well supported by your fluency and your ideas for making lessons enjoyable through stories, games and conversation. You also give relevant family support, including schoolwork and occasional supervision. The reasons for wanting the role are clear, though “gain valuable teaching experience” and experiencing Australia could be developed with a little more personal detail. The formal opening and closing suit an application letter, although addressing the couple by name, if known, would make it more directly tailored. Overall, the task is covered clearly and the ideas are extended with relevant examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The information is organised in a clear sequence: application and suitability, extra help for the family, reasons for applying, and a courteous closing. Separate paragraphs make each purpose easy to identify, and linking phrases such as “In addition to” and “I am interested in this position because” guide the reader through the letter. The progression is logical and the tone remains consistent. Cohesion is generally effective, though some links between ideas are quite explicit and formulaic, and the suitability paragraph carries several points in succession. You could make the flow more natural by varying transitions and using occasional referencing, for example connecting your language skills directly to the proposed lesson activities. The organisation is already clear; more subtle linking would make it feel smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal application, including relevant terms such as “fluently,” “educational activities,” “supervise,” and “valuable teaching experience.” The language is clear and the reader can understand your intentions throughout. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or less natural: “position adversited” contains a spelling error, “done my education from” is not idiomatic, and “comfortable in working” is awkward. “Help your children learning words” also needs a more natural construction. These slips show that you are attempting varied vocabulary, but control of spelling and common word combinations is not yet consistent. Aim to learn useful phrases as complete collocations and proofread carefully for spelling and natural phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a reason clause (“because it would allow me…”) and a conditional phrase (“If required, I could…”). Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and the letter includes some accurate structures. However, some grammatical errors remain. In “my first language, and I can speak…,” the clause is incomplete; it needs a verb such as “is Gujarati.” The phrase “help your children learning” should use “help your children learn,” while “comfortable in working” requires a different grammatical pattern, such as “comfortable working.” There are also issues with articles and prepositions in “done my education from english medium school.” These errors rarely obstruct understanding, but correcting them and maintaining accuracy in longer sentences would strengthen control.
