Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr. Watson,

I am writing to express my interest in a job posted on the Indeed website.

I have been living in Melbourne for the past three years. I just completed my studies in Hotel Management course last month. Therefore, I am looking for a full-time job which is quite flexible. I am keen on teaching Hindi to your children for a year. I am a native Hindi speaker, I am sure I would be able to train your children from basic to advanced words. Learning Hindi will expose your children to a completely new history and culture. I have already submitted my resume on Indeed for your reference. I am available to start at your earliest convenience. Additionally, I can even teach on weekends. Let me know if you have any questions for me.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Payal Bhakta

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You clearly express interest in the position and give relevant reasons: you are a native Hindi speaker, have lived in Melbourne for three years, and want flexible full-time work. However, the task is only partly addressed because two required points receive little development. You say you could teach on weekends, but this does not explain what other help you could offer the family, such as childcare, cooking, or sharing cultural activities. Your reason for wanting the job is also mainly that you are seeking flexible work; explain more specifically why teaching these children or working with this family appeals to you. The letter is relevant, but these limited details leave important parts underdeveloped.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall sequence: you introduce your purpose, describe your background and suitability, then close politely. Paragraphing and conventional letter phrases such as “I am writing to express my interest” and “I look forward to hearing from you” help the reader follow it. Within the main paragraph, however, several different points—your studies, availability, teaching ability, cultural benefits, and resume—are packed together, so the progression feels somewhat list-like. “Therefore” links your studies to seeking work, but the connection to your suitability for teaching is not fully clear. Separate the required points into focused paragraphs and use clearer links between your experience, what you can offer, and your motivation.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal application, including “express my interest,” “native Hindi speaker,” “reference,” and “earliest convenience.” These choices make your purpose and background clear, and the tone is generally appropriate. Some wording is imprecise or less natural: “train your children from basic to advanced words” does not clearly describe language teaching, while “a completely new history and culture” is broad and awkwardly phrased. “A job posted on the Indeed website” is understandable but could be more concise. Aim for precise teaching-related collocations and specific descriptions of the cultural activities you could provide. This would make your language more flexible and natural without changing the letter’s clear meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

Your grammar is generally controlled, and you use both straightforward sentences and more complex forms, as in “I am keen on teaching Hindi to your children for a year” and “Learning Hindi will expose your children to a completely new history and culture.” Meaning remains clear throughout. There are some errors and awkward constructions, however. “I just completed my studies in Hotel Management course” needs a more accurate article or structure, such as “I have just completed a course in hotel management.” The sentence “I am a native Hindi speaker, I am sure…” joins two independent clauses with only a comma; use a full stop, semicolon, or conjunction. Correcting these points and varying sentence patterns more deliberately would strengthen accuracy and range.
