Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr. Watson,

I am writing to express my interest in a job posted on the Indeed website.

I have been living in Melbourne for the past three years. I just completed my studies in a Hotel Management course last month. Therefore, I am looking for a full-time job that is quite flexible. I am keen on teaching Hindi to your children for a year. I am a native Hindi speaker, and I am sure I would be able to train your children from basic to advanced vocabulary. Learning Hindi will expose your children to a completely new history and culture. In addition, I can help them to speak Hindi fluently which will be helpful in interacting with people while travelling. I have some video lessons followed by quizzes where I can keep a track of their progress. I have already submitted my resume on Indeed for your reference. I am available to start at your earliest convenience. Additionally, I can even teach on weekends. Let me know if you have any questions for me.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Payal Bhakta

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address the main purpose clearly by expressing interest and explaining that you are a native Hindi speaker, have teaching materials, and can teach at weekends. You also give a relevant reason for wanting the role: you are seeking flexible full-time work after completing your studies. However, the task asks what else you could do for the family, and this is not really answered; teaching on weekends is still part of the teaching job. Your offer to help the children engage with Hindi culture is relevant, but the benefits are described generally rather than developed with a specific example. To strengthen the response, add a practical family contribution, such as helping with meals or childcare, and explain your motivation for living or working with this particular family.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter follows a sensible order: you introduce your interest, explain your background and suitability, then close politely. Paragraphing and linking expressions such as “Therefore,” “In addition,” and “Additionally” help the reader follow the points. The overall arrangement is coherent, though most of the information is placed in one long central paragraph, so the different task points are not clearly separated. Some links also feel mechanical, and the sequence moves from teaching benefits to video lessons, your resume, availability, and questions without much grouping. Use separate paragraphs for your suitability, other help and reasons for applying, and connect each point more naturally to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal job enquiry, including “express my interest,” “native Hindi speaker,” “interacting,” and “reference.” These choices make your purpose clear, and the reader can understand the teaching offer throughout. Some phrasing is less natural or precise, however: “train your children” is not the usual collocation for language instruction, and “keep a track of their progress” is awkward. “A completely new history and culture” is also broad and imprecise. Aim for more natural teaching-related expressions and specific wording. For example, you could say that you would teach Hindi from beginner level and monitor the children’s progress through lessons and quizzes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

Your grammar is generally controlled, with a mix of simple and more complex sentences. The present perfect in “I have been living in Melbourne for the past three years” is appropriate, and the relative clause in “where I can keep a track of their progress” shows an attempt to vary sentence structure. Most sentences are clear, and errors do not obstruct the message. There are a few areas to refine: “I just completed my studies in a Hotel Management course” has an awkward grammatical construction, and “from basic to advanced vocabulary” would be clearer with a more complete structure, such as “from basic vocabulary to more advanced language.” Check spacing and punctuation consistency as well. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen the response.
