Student answer (Band 5.5)
Dear Mrs and Mr,
I had seen your advertisement early today about you wanting a tutor for your kids to be able to speak Urdu within 1 year.
I'm convinced that I may be really suitable candidate for your kids. You see Im pure urdu speaker originally from Pakistan and both my parents speak fluent Urdu now growing up that's the language they've taught me and As far as I'm concerned Pakistani people speak urdu with other languages like punjabi and sindhi but pure urdu speakers are best one to tutor youngsters for their better pronounciation and speaking etiquettes. Further more it should be noted that I was a bilingual baby from the age of 5 I was speaking English and urdu both thus Im fluent in both languages and it will be easy for your kids to understand me within that it will be easy for me to tutor them.
Another key point Id like to add that i can facilitate your family with more things such as babysitting the kids or any necessities. Take, for instance groceries dropping and licking kids from school. I believe this would be advantageous for you.
My reason for wanting this job is is quite monumental I need to bolster my parents and alleviate the weight of responsibilities off of their shoulders. I comtemplate this chance firmly imperative for me.
Thank you.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three requested points: you explain your Urdu background and bilingual ability, offer help with childcare and errands, and give a personal reason for applying. These details make the letter relevant, and the reader can understand your main case for being suitable. However, some points need clearer development. For example, explain how your experience would help you teach children effectively, rather than relying on the broad claim that native speakers are best. The additional help is also somewhat unclear: “groceries dropping and licking kids from school” appears to mean delivering groceries and picking the children up, so state these duties precisely. Your reason for wanting the job is personal but could be linked more directly to why this particular opportunity appeals to you.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a generally coherent order: suitability comes first, followed by extra help and then your motivation. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these points, and phrases such as “Another key point” signal a shift. Some connections are less smooth, however. The long suitability paragraph combines your background, language ability, and claims about Urdu speakers, making the main points harder to follow. “Within that” does not clearly show the relationship between your fluency and your ability to teach. The final paragraph also repeats the idea of importance without explaining it further. Use shorter, more focused sentences and clearer links between each reason so the letter progresses naturally and the references remain easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for the topic, including “fluent,” “bilingual,” “suitable candidate,” and “responsibilities.” You also attempt more formal expressions such as “facilitate” and “alleviate,” showing some ambition. At times, though, word choice and collocation are inaccurate or unnatural: “facilitate your family with more things,” “groceries dropping,” and “monumental” do not express your intended meaning naturally. There are also spelling errors, including “pronounciation” and “comtemplate,” and informal forms such as “kids” are less suitable for a formal application letter. Choose precise, familiar expressions and check spelling; this will make your meaning clearer while preserving an appropriately polite tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses beginning “You see” and “as far as I’m concerned,” and the overall meaning is usually understandable. However, some errors in sentence structure, verb forms, articles, and punctuation make parts difficult to read. For example, “I had seen your advertisement early today” uses an unsuitable tense, while “I may be really suitable candidate” needs an article. The sentence beginning “You see Im pure urdu speaker” is a fragment-like construction with missing punctuation and sentence boundaries, and “My reason for wanting this job is is” contains a repeated verb. Practise accurate sentence boundaries, articles, and verb forms, then proofread for apostrophes and punctuation.
